Alfred J. "Champ" Major, III

June 22, 1962 - July 27, 2010

Alfred J. Major, III departed this life on July 27, 2010, transitioning from time to eternity. He was born on June 22, 1962, in Moncks Corner, South Carolina, a son of Alfred Major, Jr. and Lillie Ann Tingman-Major.

“Champ”, as he was affectionately called, graduated from Albany High School in 1980. Following graduation, he enlisted in the United States Army. He received an Honorable Discharge on May 22, 1985. Upon completing his military service, he was employed as a correctional officer in New York, Nevada, and finally South Carolina. In his later years, he was employed with the International Longshoreman Association Local 1422 (ILA) in Charleston, SC until his health declined.

Alfred was joined in Holy Matrimony to Carolyn Bradford on July 22, 1983. From this marriage one child was born.

“Champ” was a member of St. Peter’s AME Church.

Known amongst his peers as a mentor, teacher, loyal and caring friend, Champ enjoyed fishing, reading and discussing Scriptures, cooking, and cheering for his beloved New York Giants.

He leaves to cherish his many precious memories: his wife, Carolyn Major; his mother, Lillie Ann Tingman-Major; his father, Alfred Major, Jr.; two sons, Alfred “Mann” Major and Alfred “Fat Man” Major; three daughters, Courtney Lee-Major, Kristen Smith, and Chenise Major; one grandson, Rayshawn Major; four sisters: Joanne Mack, Alfreda Major, Annette Major, Linnette (Paul) Major-Alcock; four brothers: Willie James (Doris) Pear, Stacy (Laurie) Rodd, Kelly Rodd, and Jeffrey Taylor; one special niece, Janiya Ann West; and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and other devoted family, friends and co-workers.
