Biography

Dora Lee Watson was born on August 8, 1919 at Richmond Plantation in South Carolina. She was the daughter of the late Sam and Dinah Watson.

Dora Lee was educated in Oakley, South Carolina. In her young adult life, she moved to Charleston, SC where she became employed as a Nurse’s Aide and housekeeper. She later relocated to New York, and was employed in many jobs working in a dentist’s office as a cook and dental assistant. In 1964, Dora obtained employment at Jacobi Medical Center as a domestic technician. Due to health problems, she retired in 1969.

In 1974, she returned to South Carolina to care for her mother. Upon moving back, she rejoined her childhood church, Irving Chapel A.M.E. Church. Dora was the founder of an annual program, The Harvest.

Dora Lee’s spiritual journey began at an early age at Irving Chapel A.M.E. Church. While living in Charleston, SC, she attended Ebenezer A.M.E. Church. While living in New York, she became an active member under the leadership of the late Reverend James Rivers. Dora was the President of the Senior Usher Board, Choir Member and Guardian of the Junior Choir.

In November 2006, Dora returned to New York due to her health problems. She was cared for by her family continuously. Sadly, she was hospitalized in June 2011 and was later admitted to Morningside House Nursing Home where she received excellent care.

Dora departed this life on May 5, 2012 in Bronx, NY.

Dora leaves to cherish her memories: daughters, Elizabeth Dobere and Diane Jefferies; grandchildren: Marilyn Williams (Sloan), Yolanda Bennett (Carlton), Albert Green III, Jamil Green, Sammy Green (Frances), Gale Green (Rodney) and Shane Jefferies; ten great-grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren; her beloved goddaughter, Synovia Bowman; two dear friends, Lillian Borden and Lizzie Bryan; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Dora was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Carol Green.

Dora will be missed for her Apple Pies.
