Biography

Susie Westberry was born September 10, 1929, in Berkeley County, South Carolina. She was a daughter of the late Joe and Mary Ella Segar. She departed this life on Thursday, July 19, 2012, at the home of her sister, Geneva Gaillard, where she resided.

Susie was educated in the Berkeley County School System.

Susie was joined in Holy Wedlock to Mack Westberry who preceded her in death.

Susie was an active member of Irving Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church. She served as the President of the Usher Board, a choir member, Stewardess, and as President of the Women’s Missionary Society (WMS). She traveled the Tri-County area representing Irving Chapel, and even though she did not have a car, she made sure she was one in the number. Susie was also an active member of St. John Reformed Episcopal Church in Charleston, SC, while married to the late Mack Westberry.

Susie was employed for 43 years as a caregiver for the Gay family of Charleston, SC. While employed with the Gay family, she gave love and in return, Susie received love.

Although Susie never had any biological children of her own, she had a God giving spirit for caring for, as she would say, “OPC” - Other People’s Children. While employed with the Gay family, she gained two adopted daughters, Elizabeth Gay and Frankie (Doug) Westbrook, and a son, Doug Jr. Susie showed and gave so much love until Elizabeth said she really thought Susie was her mother. Susie was also a positive influence in Linda Days’ life. Linda met Susie during her teenage years; and through Susie’s love and encouraging words, Linda found God. The family gives special thanks to Beatrice, Hattie May and Arlene Laila for doing all that they did for Susie.

Susie was preceded in death by six siblings: Josephine Fludd, Margarie Lawrence, Dorothy “Duck” Limehouse, Viola Segar, Ruth Segar and Jervey Segar.
Susie leaves to cherish her memories, three sisters: Helen Harleston of Moncks Corner, SC, Louise “Bobby” Grimes of Brooklyn, NY and Geneva Gaillard of Moncks Corner, SC; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
