Obituary

Albertha Marion Davis, daughter of the late Tom Marion and Regina Drayton Marion, was born on March 8, 1928 in Bonneau, South Carolina. She peacefully slipped away and answered the call to life eternal surrounded by her loving family on Friday, March 13, 2020 at home in St. Stephen, SC.

She attended the public schools of Berkeley County.

Following the spiritual guidance and steps of her God-fearing parents, Tom and Regina Marion, Mother Davis was reared in Christian values and love with her siblings. With their guidance and teaching, Mother Davis would become an obedient, dedicated and faithful servant for the Lord.

Mother Davis displayed her dedication to Christianity and Jesus Christ, by her many acts of service at her home away from home, Bethel United Methodist Church. At Bethel, Mother Davis served in many leadership roles that included: Class Leader, Church Mother, Lay Minister, President of the Senior Choir and member of the Prayer Band and Church School. When Mother Davis' health conditions prevented her from attending regular Sunday service, she maintained her connection with Bethel by having in-house services with members of the church, receiving updates from her family and friends and weekly visits from her trusted church members, Ms. Ann Judge and Mrs. Annie Ruth King (Class Leader).

Mother Davis also shared her talents with her community by being a member of the Berkeley Women's Choir, with her beloved sister, Dorothy. Mother Davis and her sister would travel throughout the Lowcountry, singing and praising the Lord with others. Mother Davis received her calling from the Lord to spread his word and she obeyed. Her favorite scriptures for teaching included: Jesus' encounter with the Samaritan woman at the well and the sick woman that knew she would be healed if she could only touch the hem of Jesus's garment.

She was united in Holy Matrimony to Mr. Henry S. Davis on May 2, 1946. To this union, nine children were born.

Mother Davis believed in equal opportunity for all people regardless of race, creed or gender. She was a proud registered voter and felt so blessed to have had the opportunity to vote for the first Black U.S. President, Barack Obama. She was an outspoken advocate for education. With her own limited education, she understood the power of having a quality education. Based on this knowledge, she always encouraged all of her children to get a higher education. One of her favorite quotes was, "Nobody can ever take your education from you."

Mother Davis was a virtuous woman of God. Her presence could fill a room. Her spirit brought joy and hope to others; her humor could make anyone laugh and she had a keen sense of style. She always carried herself as a lady and she always had an open heart, as well as home to all her family and friends. Mother Davis was truly a splendid gift from God, that will cause her to missed here on Earth.

She was preceded in death by: her parents, Tom and Regina Marion; husband, Henry S. Davis; and siblings, Dorothy Faber, Elouise White, Evangeline Bolden, Katie Mae Montgomery, Christine Jackson, Robert Marion, Steve Marion, Joanna Marion and Nathaniel Marion.

She leaves to cherish her precious memories: her children, Lula Mae (Rev. Arthur) Rivers, Susan Mildred Lloyd, Elizabeth D. Burgess, James Henry (Patricia) Davis, Robert Mario (Joyce) Davis, Thomas Marion Davis, Pearline Davis Watson, Steve Christopher (Rose) Davis, Esquire, Cornie Jerome (Bridgette) Davis and Charo Precious Davis; her siblings, Phillip (Dorothy) Marion and Pearl (Myles) Meredith; 22 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; 6 great, great-grandchildren; three godchildren; special great-grandson, Curtis Henry Hunter; special grandniece, Bridgett Hood; special great-grandniece, Angel (Roger) Greene; best friend, Sister Mary Nelson; devoted spiritual friend, Brother Dean Hill; a host of nieces, nephews, church members and friends.
