Obituary

The Lord is my Shepherd, I shall not want." - Psalm 23:1 Alma Bernice McElveen heard her Savior calling her to come and be at rest. She departed this world on November 4, 2008, at Summerville Medical Center, Summerville, SC. Alma was born August 2, 1933, in Bonneau, SC. She was the oldest of seven children born to the late Silas and Lillie Ann Mack. Alma was educated in the public schools of Berkeley County, SC. She joined Sumpter Chapel United Methodist Church at an early age. As a young adult, she attended several United Methodist conferences. She served in many capacities, including Secretary of the Youth Fellowship and Secretary of the Usher Board. Alma was joined in holy matrimony to Crayton Edward McElveen, Sr. on August 9, 1954. This union was blessed with the birth of five children. Bernice, as she was affectionately called, spent most of her adult life in Dumfries, Virginia. She was employed in food service and was a devoted caregiver for children. Bernice returned to South Carolina to become a caregiver for her parents after they became ill. She faithfully took care of them until their death. Bernice continued her membership with Sumpter Chapel, now New Light United Methodist Church, after moving back home. One of her favorite songs was "Pass Me Not." She believed that God had given his angels charge over her to keep her in all her trials. Bernice was a loving daughter, sister, mother, grandmother and friend. She was a pleasure to anyone who met her and always wore a smile on her face. She touched many lives. Bernice will be sadly missed by everyone who loved her. She leaves to cherish her memory: three loving daughters, Doris Elaine (Willie) McElveen of Triangle, VA, Violet Ann Carter of the home, and Deborah Lee (Hubert) Joyner of St. Stephen, SC; two devoted sons, Crayton Edward McElveen, Jr. of Craigsville, VA and Michael Timothy McElveen of Moncks Corner, SC; a special adopted son, Arthur Green of Dumfries, VA; two sisters, Annie Ruth Browne of Brooklyn, NY and Affie Loretta (Willie) Gibson of Durham, NC; one brother, James (Ruby) Mack of Hyattsville, MD; four sisters-in-law, four brothers-in-law, six aunts, three uncles, eight grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Three siblings, Oscar, Thomas Lee, and Willie Alphonza, preceded Bernice in death.
