Alonzo Washington, Sr. was the son of the late Elder Eugene Washington and the late Floria Mae Washington Jenkins,. He was born in Dorchester County, South Carolina. on January 18, 1956. He departed this life on Sunday, July 5, 2020 at the Ralph H. Johnson Veteran Administration Medical Center, Charleston, South Carolina.
Alonzo attended the public schools of Berkeley County. He honorably served in the United States Army, traveling across the United States and abroad. He obtained the rank of Sergeant, and received an Honorable Discharge.
He was a faithful member of Mount Moriah Missionary Baptist Church, North Charleston, SC, after rededicating his life to Christ and being baptized. He was a member of the Pastor's Aid Ministry.
He was united in holy wedlock to Alice Maranda Pate on December 27, 2014.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and two brothers, Alfred Gadson, Sr. and Michael Washington.
Those who will always cherish his memory are: a devoted wife, Alice Maranda Washington of Summerville, SC; daughters, Dacia Michelle Washington and Dwylette Latrice Tucker both of Moncks Corner, SC and Trenez Briggs of Goldsboro, NC; sons, Michael Jamar Ramsey of Raleigh, NC and Alonzo (Elsie) Washington, Jr. of Lynchburg, VA; stepdaughters, Alicia M. (Dexter, Sr.) Washington of Ladson, SC and Jimmetta C. Reid of Summerville, SC; siblings, Carolyn Cummings of Charlotte, NC, Maxine Gourdine of Summerville, SC, Mary Ann Johnson and Sandra (Pete) Pendergrass both of North Charleston, SC; Joe N. (Gladys) Washington, Sr. of Pineville, SC, Timothy Washington of Summerville, SC and Rodney (Patricia) Washington of Schertz, TX; 23 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; two special mothers-in-law, Sadie (Rev. Alfred) Williams of North Charleston, SC and Mrs. Azalee R. Pate of Moncks Corner, SC; Alonzo also gained eight step sisters and brothers: Lillie Mae (George) Jones and George (Rebecca) Jenkins, Jr. both of St. Stephen, SC, David (Deloris) Jenkins of Bronx, NY, Walter Nathaniel of Portland, OR, Beatrice (Jonathan) Crawford, Marie (Gilbert) Wailings, Jeanette Jenkins and Doris Jenkins all of Baltimore, MD; his best friend ("Partner in Crime"), Arzwell Peace; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
The Celebration of Life Service will take place on Monday, July 13, 2020, 11:00 a.m., at O. Allen Gethers Memorial Chapel, 200 Grace Street, Moncks Corner, SC. This service will be PRIVATE. As per CDC guidelines for COVID-19, please wear a mask, practice social distancing and wash/sanitize hands. Thank you for your understanding and prayers during this time. Viewing will take place on Sunday, July 12, 2020, from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Military Honors will be performed at 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be in Westview Cemetery, 1010 Cooper Store Road, Moncks Corner, SC.
