Althea Clinton Taylor, Sr., the son of the late Jonnie and Leila Dorsey Taylor, was born on October 16, 1925 in Delray Beach, Florida. He departed this life on Monday, February 2, 2015 at Trident Medical Center in North Charleston, SC. He was educated in the public schools of Palm Beach County, Florida. Althea, affectionately known as "Taylor" or Big Al", came from a rich legacy and was the great, great-grandson of George "Pa" Hanna of Bimini (in the Bahamas) in 1896. Althea's rich heritage lands him in the lineage of this great patriarch who founded the historical Bahamian neighborhood known as "Hanna Town", located off Northwest 3rd and 4th Avenues, between Northwest 3rd Street and Lake Ida Road just outside Delray Beach, FL where Althea grew up. Althea was first married to Ethel Brown of which two children were born. He later married Vermel Dingle Taylor, his wonderful loving wife of 46 years. Althea faithfully served his country all over the world in the United States Navy for more than 20 years and was a well-decorated soldier. He received an Honorable Discharge for service to his country. After service to his country, he became an employee of Amerada Hess Corporation of North Charleston as a dispatcher. He retired after 15 years of employment with the company. Althea was an active member of Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church, North Charleston, SC where he served as: Trustee Pro Tem for many years, Usher, Vice President of the Lay Organization, Sons of Allen, Male Chorus member and a Sunday School member. He also served as 1st Vice President of the Kingstree District Lay Organization and was elected a Delegate and two time Alternate to the General Conference. He was well known throughout the AME Church on the Local, District, Conference and Connectional levels. Althea enjoyed spending time with his wife and children, traveling, supporting, encouraging them and making sure they knew the extent of his love. He enjoyed spending time with long time friends, acquaintances and a host of loving family members - barbequing and enjoying holiday gatherings. He was an avid Miami Dolphins and Atlanta Falcons fan. He was also a great fan of the Atlanta Braves baseball team. He loved and played most sports and was the premier host of his annual Super Bowl party. Althea loved music, specifically the Big Band genre and loved to cook. He was a true man of valor and lived by the motto, "Love is what it does." He was preceded in death by his grandmother, Catherine Greene; his parents, Jonnie and Leila Taylor; sister, Rayme T. Mack and brother, Harold Taylor. Althea leaves to cherish his memory: his wife, Vermel Taylor of the home; three children, Apostle Althea C. Taylor, Jr. (Kym) of Dallas, TX, Darrel Jackson (fiance', Chelseanna) of Summerville, SC and Dr. Annette Jackson (Marcus) of Columbus, OH; special daughters, Catonia and Rosie; his grandchildren, Raynard A. Miller (Rhochelle), Kenric Miller, Demra A. Miller (Kim), Audrey, Pastor William JC Wallace (Tiana), Arion, Brionna, Darian, Bryleigh and Cianna; great-grandchildren, Channel, Peighton, Antonio, Amari, Reaghan, Reigh, Demra II, Zamir, Kamarreon, Ryland, Sa' Nai, Tayron, Taylor, William, Emily, Kenric II, Jordan, Niyah, Isaiah and Andrew; his long-time best friend, Herbert Drayton of South Carolina; sisters and brothers-in-law; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
