The late Anna Ruth Smalls was born to the late William Steward and Ruth Mae Simmons Steward in Summerville, South Carolina on December 10, 1954. On Thursday, May 16, 2024, Anna departed this life in Roper Hospital, Charleston, South Carolina.

Anna was educated in the public schools of Dorchester and Berkeley Counties and was a graduate of Berkeley High School, Class of 1972. After graduating, Anna attended Nielson Electronics Trade School, where she studied data entry. Following trade school, Anna held many positions, until she embarked on a career with Cummins Engine from which she retired after working 10 years.

At an early age, Anna became a member of Branch African Methodist Episcopal Church where she was a committed member and faithfully served as an Usher.

To know Anna was to love her, she greeted everyone with a smile. Anna had a feisty spirit that was rooted in love. Anna made friends wherever she went, however family was one of the most important things to her. She was extremely proud of her children and grandchildren. She was very compassionate, and was always willing to lend a helping hand. Anna loved to travel, cook, entertain and dress. She was affectionately known as the family fashionista.

Anna was preceded in death by: her parents, William and Ruth Mae Steward; spouse, William Smalls, Jr. of 36 years; siblings, Viola Steward, MacArthur Steward, Patricia Ann Steward and William Steward, Jr. and stepchildren, Anthony Davis and Dominick Smalls.

Anna leaves to cherish her loving memories: her children, Brian Ricardo Vanhannegyn (Hope) and Kendall Jevon Smalls; siblings, Edna Mae Clark of Goose Creek, SC, Patsy S. Bowers of Greenville, TN, Sandra Deneise Gilliard of Awendaw, SC, Daniel Steward of Greenville, TN and David Jerome Steward of Atlanta, GA; brothers-in-law, Richard Smalls (Mildred) and Archie Smalls (Deloris) both of Oakley, SC; grandchildren, Brielle, Brian Jr., Brenae and Brileye Vanhannegyn and Aydan Hogan; nieces, nephews, a host of other relatives and friends.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held Friday, May 24, 2024, 11:00 a.m., at Branch AME Church, 482 Jedburg Road, Summerville, SC, with viewing from 10:30 a.m. until the time of service. Burial will be in Smalls Memorial Cemetery, Scott Hill Lane, Moncks Corner, SC. Viewing will be held Thursday, May 23. 2024, 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., at the funeral home.
