Obituary

Azalee Stephens Harris, daughter of the late Ruby Smalls and Boston Green, was born on July 9, 1933 in Berkeley County, South Carolina. She quietly slipped away to be with the Lord on Wednesday, February 1, 2017.

She attended the public schools of Berkeley County. At an early age, she joined Greater St. James African Methodist Episcopal Church, and accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior. She worked for the Berkeley County School District for over twenty years and later retired.

In 1962, Azalee was joined in Holy Wedlock to William R. Stephens, who preceded her in death. From this union, seven children were born. After this union, she joined New Grove Hall Christian Church. She worked faithfully in the church as a Stewardess, Choir member and Kitchen Staff member, until her health began to decline.

In 1992, she was joined in Holy Matrimony to Rev. Leonard Harris, who preceded her in death.

Azalee was a devoted wife, mother, sister, aunt, grandmother and friend. To know her was to love her, and she was loved by all. She loved cooking, quilting, sewing and helping others.

Azalee was preceded by two brothers, Raymond Ridley and Wilford Smalls and two sisters, Celestine Walker and Janie Lawrence.

Azalee leaves a legacy of: five daughters, Kathy Moses (Timothy) of Summerville, SC, Willette Stephens of Austin, TX, Sylvia Simmons (Tony) of Moncks Corner, SC, Amelia Collier (Mannie) of Ridgeville, SC and Tara Stephens of Atlanta, GA; two sons, Kenneth Stephens (Rochelle) of Atlanta, GA and Kevin Stephens (Latarsha) of Goose Creek, SC; four sisters, Cloteen Peace, Edna Lary and Vera Butler all of Moncks Corner, SC and Joyce Forrest of Tyler, MS; one brother, Herman Davis (Elease) of Moncks Corner, SC; 18 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; one sister-in-law, Louise Shaw (James) of Alvin, SC; one brother-in-law, Fletcher Gilliard (Hazel) of Moncks Corner, SC; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins other relatives and loving friends.
