Obituary

Eunice Barbara Lee Rivers transitioned from this life to eternal life with the Lord on Saturday December 14, 2013, at Trident Medical Center, Charleston, SC. She was born on January 15, 1946, in Mecklenburg County, the third child of the late Mabel Bracey and James Walker, and stepdaughter of the late Leonard Bracey. Barbara was educated in the public schools in Mecklenburg County, Virginia. Barbara began her work career as a factory worker in Brooklyn, New York. She was later employed as a Claims Adjuster at the Hecht's Company, where she retired from in 1989 and relocated to South Carolina. In South Carolina, Barbara worked at Rite Aid Pharmacy as a cashier. After Rite Aid closed, she became a Supervisor at CVS Pharmacy until her heath began to decline. Barbara's Christian pilgrimage began at an early age. She joined and was baptized at Trinity Episcopal Church in South Hill, VA. In the 1970's, she joined First Baptist Church in Washington DC where she served as an Usher. She also was a member of Saint John's United Baptist Church in Washington DC where she served as a Sunday School Teacher and Parent Coordinator of the Children and Youth Choir. In the 1980's, she became a member of Greater Emanuel A.M.E Church, Cordesville SC where she was a dedicated member and served faithfully until her earthly departure. She served as President of the Women's Missionary Society, Usher, Sunday School Teacher and Chairperson for the Annual Tea. She also assisted with the Pulpit Aide Society. Her passion was praising God and loving the Lord. Barbara witnessed her faith for God on a daily basis as is found Psalms 34:1 "I will bless the LORD at all times; his praise shall continually be in my mouth." Even though she could not carry a tune, Barbara loved to sing. Barbara was involved with the community and used her talents to uplift others. She was an active member of the Cordesville Community Citizens Outreach Team where she contacted members in the community about the upcoming monthly meetings. She loved to cook, and she was excellent at it. She shared her delicious warm meals with the elderly on Sundays. Barbara loved to talk and often would give encouraging words to others. While living in Brooklyn, NY, Barbara met and fell madly in love with David Rivers, Jr. After a short courtship, David and Barbara were married. This union was blessed with two children, Anthony and Deville Rivers, who were reared in a loving and Christian home. Affectionately known to her grandchildren as "Mom", Barbara will be remembered for her many acts of kindness, listening ear, her caring spirit, and her unwavering faith in God. She will be greatly missed by many. Barbara leaves to cherish her loving memories: her loving husband, David Rivers Jr.; sons, Anthony D. and Deville M. Rivers; daughter, Jo-Anne P.
