Obituary

Betty Jean V. Hutchinson, the first born to Walter L. and Minnie E. Hutchinson, was born on March 8, 1940 in Moncks Corner, South Carolina. She departed this life unexpectedly, early morning on Sunday, August 4, 2024.

Betty's father and mother were working in Boston and they later decided to bring their children, Betty and Tommy after they found suitable housing. Betty and Tommy were living with their father's mother, "Grandma Liza." In 1950, her mother's brother, Joseph Crawford also sent for his family, Aunt Evelyn and children, Joe and Jacqueline.  They all traveled to Boston on the Amtrak Train. This was during the time when there was a mass exodus northward to find jobs not attainable in the south. Betty reminisced many times about how she always remembered the nice train trip to Boston.

Betty completed Boston Business School in 1958 and graduated from Girls Trade School in 1959. She worked on DOS software for personal computers and effective use of the PC Hard Disk.

In 1961, Betty obtained a certificate in childhood development at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Boston, Massachusetts. She was an experienced caterer for weddings and church functions and has catered for as many as 300 attendees. From 1972-1996, she worked as an evaluation technician at Polaroid Corporation where she would eventually retire. Betty was instrumental in assisting many family members and friends to work at Polaroid.

Betty was baptized in the name of Jesus and received the gift of the Holy Ghost. She was a dedicated member at Faithful Church of Christ in Boston, MA. Betty was very faithful in her work and in service of the Lord. She served on the Usher Board for many years, and had a gift and love for the art of Cooking. At Faithful Church, she was head of the kitchen staff where she developed menus and prepared appropriate meals for the Ministers Board conferences and special events. Whether at church, home or your house, Betty was ready to strike up a menu for the next event that might be months ahead of time. The menu can change many times as well. She loved seafood, especially lobster; however, the cost of lobster did not diminish her taste for it. She loved to decorate her home and make her home comfortable and enjoyed the finer things in life.

Betty never married and did not have natural born children, but she always spoiled her nieces and nephews. As an 'Aunt' she illustrated her faith in God by bringing her nieces and nephews to Faithful Church for Sunday School. They also participated in Easter and Christmas programs. She mainly showed her love by what she did for them.

She may not have personally reached out too often to call, but once you are visited or called, she may run down the list, how are your children, or have you heard from other relatives? If she called you, after the hellos it would be her voice to first speak to ask you in a special caring tone, How Are You Doing?

After the passing of her father Walter Hutchinson, her mother Minnie, Tommy and Uncle Arthur, Betty moved back home to South Carolina. She joined Triumphant Church where she continued the Betty Way of ushering, helped plan menus for events, etc. As in Boston, her doors continued to be open for tasty meals and cookouts in Summerville, SC.

She leaves to cherish her enduring and unfading memory: her loving aunt, Mother Evelyn Crawford; beloved cousins, Mother Anna Shelton and Gwendolyn Crawford who were sisters that she never had; her niece and nephew, Stacey Ann Hutchinson-Wilson ( ) and Thomas Christian Hutchinson (Anne); first cousins, Anna Shelton, Barbara Daniels, Bishop  Anthony Hamby, Johnny Hutchinson, Gwendolyn Crawford, Joseph Crawford, Jacqueline Crawford, Cynthia Wall, Joan Crawford-Ballou, Stanley Mark Crawford, John (Michael) Crawford, Kenneth Crawford, Margaret Crawford-Barrett, Larry Crawford, Sandy Crawford, St. Julian (Chucky) Crawford, Anita Somerville, Shirley Burden and Michael Crawford.

She was preceded in death by: her loving father and mother, Walter and Minnie Hutchinson; a beloved brother, Thomas Lawrence Hutchinson; nephews, Mark and Wally Hutchinson and niece, Tanya Yvette Hutchinson.
