With profound sadness, we announce the passing of Mr. Bobby James Matthews, who entered into eternal rest on Monday, August 31, 2026, in Summerville, South Carolina.

Bobby James Matthews dedicated much of his life to serving others. He proudly served in the United States Army for more than 20 years, giving years of service and commitment to his country. Following his military career, he continued his dedication to service through education, serving as the Senior JROTC Instructor at Cross High School in Cross, South Carolina. In that role, he had the opportunity to guide, encourage, and educate young people, leaving an impact that extended well beyond the classroom. His commitment to discipline, leadership, service, and the development of young people reflected a life dedicated to helping others prepare for their own futures.

Those left to cherish his memory include his beloved wife, Lura Mae Matthews; and his siblings, Nathaniel Matthews (Edna), Moses Matthews (Carolyn), Nathan Matthews (nephew/brother), and Leonard Bryan (cousin/brother).

Bobby’s life was one of service—first to his country and later to the young people he helped educate and mentor. The lessons he shared, the lives he influenced, and the example he provided will remain a meaningful part of his legacy.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Saturday, October 3, 2026, at 11:00 a.m., at St. Stephen Missionary Baptist Church, 272 Church Road, St. Stephen, SC.

Burial, with Full Military Honors, will take place on Monday, October 5, 2026, at 11:00 a.m., at Florence National Cemetery, 803 East National Cemetery Road, Florence, SC 29506.

As the family mourns the loss of a beloved husband, brother, mentor, educator, and veteran, they find comfort in the life he lived and the service he gave to others. Please keep the Matthews family in your thoughts and prayers during this time of bereavement.
