Dr. Clara Holt Cooper was born September 10, 1927, m Houston County, Georgia. She was the youngest child born to the late Eddie Holt and Albertha Patterson Holt. Clara's mother died when she was very young, and her father died on her l 0th birthday. She was raised by her oldest sister, Ida Lou.

Clara's early educational journey began in the vibrant landscapes of Georgia before continuing her pursuit of knowledge in Jacksonville, Florida. Her academic path led her to Florida A&M University, where she earned a Bachelor of Science in Biology, laying the foundation for a future prosperous in educational achievements. However, Clara's quest for education was far from over; she was a woman whose passion for learning knew no bounds, as evidenced by her impressive collection of degrees in education.

Her pursuit of advanced studies took her to the University of North Carolina at Greenville, where she obtained a Master's degree, marking another milestone in her academic career. But Clara's thirst for knowledge was insatiable. She further expanded her expertise at the Citadel, where she earned a degree in Library Science, demonstrating her diverse academic interests and dedication to expanding her intellectual horizons.

However, she didn't stop there; she continued to deepen her impact in the educational field by acquiring a Specialist in Education Degree from the Citadel Graduate College. This achievement was a testament to her commitment to excellence and her desire to contribute meaningfully to the world of education. Clara's educational odyssey culminated at Nova University, where she was awarded a Ph.D. in Educational Leadership (EED). This pinnacle highlighted her academic prowess and unwavering dedication to education's transformative power. Through her extensive academic journey, Clara emerged as a beacon of knowledge, embodying the spirit of lifelong learning and inspiring countless individuals along the way.

Her distinguished career in education commenced in the mid­-1950s, starting with her role as a teacher at Mary McLeod Bethune Elementary School in Jacksonville, Florida. Subsequently, her path took her to South Carolina, where she began her tenure in education at R.A. Ready School, joining their faculty as a dedicated teacher. Her fervor and commitment to education quickly propelled her into a new position as the librarian at Berkeley Elementary School. In this role, she continued to refine her educational abilities and played a significant part in fostering the growth and learning of her students.

Clara's journey didn't stop there; her expertise and commitment to education saw her ascend to the position of library coordinator for the Berkeley County Schools. This role allowed her to impact the wider educational community, shaping the library services across the county. The 1980s brought a significant milestone in Clara's career when she was appointed the principal of Cainhoy Elementary School. She demonstrated exceptional leadership and dedication in this capacity, guiding the school and its students through a decade of growth and learning.

Clara served as principal of Cainhoy Elementary School with distinction until her retirement in the 1992-93 school year. Her career, from the 1960s through the early 90s, was characterized by a relentless pursuit of excellence in education, leaving a legacy on the schools and communities she served.

Clara served in several professional organizations. She was a member of the Zeta Phi Beta Sorority and Alpha Pi Chi Sorority, past president of the SC Association of School Library, and more.

Clara was a member of Mt. Carmel African Methodist Episcopal Church. She served on many auxiliary boards, taught Sunday School, and sang in the church choir. She was very instrumental in helping the youth prepare for the Oratorical Contest.

She devotedly participated in a prayer line group for many years, marking her Thursdays and Saturday nights as sacred times dedicated to this spiritual engagement. During these sessions, she was unreachable, fully immersed in the prayer line activities. This commitment underscores her deep connection to her faith and the community, demonstrating how these periods of collective prayer and support became integral to her routine.

Clara was driven by an unquenchable thirst for knowledge and a fervent passion for sharing it; this woman is a beacon of inspiration in education. Her life is a testament to the belief that learning is a lifelong journey, and she approaches every teaching opportunity with a zeal that ignites the same fervor in her students. She weaved a tapestry of curiosity and understanding with every lesson, encouraging her pupils to question, explore, and discover.

Her dedication to education goes beyond the classroom; it's an integral part of her identity, driving her to constantly seek new knowledge, challenge conventional wisdom, and inspire those around her to do the same. In her eyes, education is not just about imparting knowledge; it's about empowering minds, nurturing critical thinking, and shaping the leaders of tomorrow. Through her commitment to teaching, she not only enlightens minds but also touches hearts, leaving an indelible mark on the future of education.

Clara was preceded in death by her husband, Albert Mannie Cooper; siblings, Ida Lou Holt, Edward Holt, Willie Lee Jackson, Walter Holt, Jessie Mae Holt, and John Holt; stepson, Joel Richmond; step-daughter-in-law, Jackie Richmond; and step-grandson, Patrick Richmond.

Clara is survived by her loving daughter, Cathy A. Cooper, of the home; two grandsons reared in the home, Brandon Cooper (Britney) and Andre Cooper; and great-granddaughter, Carly Cooper; step-grandchildren, Pamela Major Simmons, Coretta Simmons Blume, Dr. Katina Richmond, and Angela R. Gaddist; godchild, Cheryl Lewis; sister-in-law, Leila Cooper; special niece, Marketta Mclaughlin; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held Saturday, February 24, 2024, 11:00 a.m., at Mt. Carmel AME Church, 1059 Old Black Oak Road, Moncks Corner, SC. Interment will be in Cooper's Memorial Cemetery. Viewing will be held Friday, February 23, 2024, 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., at the funeral home.
