"For we know that if the earthly tent we live in is destroyed, we have a building from God, an eternal house in heaven, not built by human hands." - 2 Corinthians 5:1 (NIV) Columbus Grant, Sr., son of the late Christopher Cooper and Rebecca Davis, was born on July 23, 1931 in Berkeley County, South Carolina. He was reared by Theodore and Catherine Nelson. Columbus departed this life on Saturday, November 10, 2012. Columbus was educated in the Berkeley County School System. He served three years in the United States Army, where he received the following medals: Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Korean Service Medal and the United Nations Service Medal. He was also a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post # 9509. Columbus retired from the Federal Government, having worked at the Bureau of Engraving and Printing in Washington, DC and the Charleston Naval Shipyard in Charleston, SC. Not wanting to "keep still", upon his retirement, he worked various security jobs throughout the Lowcountry including: C.R. Bard, Santee Cooper and Piggly Wiggly. Columbus accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as his Savior. Throughout his Christian walk, he was a member of New Macedonia Baptist Church, Washington, DC. Upon relocating to South Carolina in the late 1970s, he and his family joined Rock Hill Baptist Church, Moncks Corner, SC. He later became a member of Day Dawn Baptist Church, Pineville, SC, where he served as a Deacon. Most recently, he was a member of New Home Baptist Church, Landover, MD. Columbus was a loving and caring person who deeply loved his children. He was affectionately called "Mr. Gee" or Mr. Grant by all those who knew him. He was a "respecter of time", up early and getting ready hours in advanced for wherever he had to be. He loved working in his yard, watching baseball, and reading and writing letters. Columbus was joined in Holy Matrimony to Daisy Green Grant. To this union, six children were born. Daisy preceded him in death. He leaves behind to cherish his memories: six children, Felecia (Donald) Simmons of Goose Creek, SC, Columbus Grant, Jr. of Moncks Corner, SC, Zebbie Warren of Waldorf, MD, Yulanda Grant of Waldorf, MD, Loleta Ravenell of Pineville, SC and Demetrius (Devonda) Grant of Yuma, AZ; twenty grandchildren, Tisean, Kendall, Deseia, Marti, Kayla, Katrice, Tabatha, Daesha, Demetria, Jayla, Demetrius Jr., Courtney, Corrie, Tameika, Sam, Greg, Nakia, George, Radnique and Antwone; fourteen great-grandchildren; four great, great-grandchildren; two dear sisters, Jessie Mae Frazier and Mary Flowers; five brothers-in-law; four sisters-in-law; a very special family friend, Deloris Anderson; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Wilma Ransford and a sister, Ethel Whitaker.
