Obituary

Craig Sinclair Smith passed away peacefully on Sunday, July 21, 2024, at Lowcountry Community Hospice House in Summerville, South Carolina.

Craig was born in Brooklyn, New York on September 28, 1951, to Thurston Smith, Sr. and Alethia Stewart Smith. In his early years, he was employed in construction and helped in building the Mark Clark Expressway in Charleston, South Carolina. Craig furthered his education at Trident Technical College and later earned degrees in Business Administration and Education from Charleston Southern University. His passion for education led him to work as a Special Education Assistant and Chair of the "Gentlemen Warrior" Club, where he inspired and mentored numerous young men. Craig was widely praised for his dedication to going above and beyond what was required to support and meet the needs of the youth.

Craig was married to his loving wife, Edith M. Smith for 27 years. Together they grew as a couple and shared a love for our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ at Refuge Temple Church. There he served as the Chairman of the Brotherhood, a Sunday School Teacher, and a member of the Trustee Board. Craig was also a cherished member of the Church Choir where many enjoyed his singing and often requested him to sing a number of their favorite songs. His rendition of "I Can't Give Up" was particularly loved and reflected his unwavering spirit during his final days.

Craig loved the Lord and anytime an opportunity was presented, he would eagerly share the word of God, as he was an avid talker and debater.  He was also known for his enthusiasm of James Bond movies and his sweets drinks from "Starbucks". His distinctive Starbucks order was: "a tall vanilla latte, two pumps only, no foam, double, extra whip, and mocha drizzle in a Grande cup".

Craig was preceded in death by his parents, Thurston and Alethia Smith; brother, Bruce and son, Omar.

Craig leaves to cherish his memory: his beloved wife, Mrs. Edith M. Smith; his daughter, Chandra Muhammad (Starkim); brothers, Daryl Smith and Reverend Thurston S. Smith, Jr. (Cheryl); three aunts, Regina Atkins, Harriet S. Corprew, and Vicky Smith; two uncles, Coleridge Smith and Gerard Sims, Sr.; his grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, family, and friends who will miss him dearly.

Craig's legacy of love, faith, and soulful singing will forever inspire those who knew him.
