Deacon Elias Simmons, a son of the late Pinckney Simmons, Sr. and Carrie Green Simmons, was born on April 30, 1928 in Cordesville, South Carolina. He departed this life on Sunday, November 16, 2014 at 3:35 p.m. at UniHealth Post-Acute Care of Moncks Corner, Moncks Corner, SC. Deacon Simmons was educated in the public schools of Berkeley County. He was an active member of Thomas Temple and St. James Reformed Episcopal Church. He later became a member of Tabernacle of God Soul Saving Center after his marriage to Elouise Mazyck. Curly, as he was affectionately called, was married to Margaret Simmons. This union was blessed with four children. Margaret and a son, Elias Simmons, Jr. preceded him in death. In 1973, he was united in marriage to Elouise Mazyck. He was a member of Moncks Corner Lodge No. 323, Free and Accepted Masons, Prince Hall Affiliated. Curly worked as a carpenter and in construction until he retired. His hobbies included fishing, hunting and making flowers. He was preceded in death by: two sisters, Clara Butler and Alese "Bell" Johnson; three brothers, Sam Flarisee, Herman Simmons and Jessie Simmons, Sr.; and a grandson, Antonio Simmons. Those left to cherish his memories are: his loving wife of 41 years, Evangelist Elouise Simmons; ten children, Truman (Betty) Brightman of Moore, SC, E.J. Walter (Birdie) Simmons of Cordesville, SC, Elaine (Douglas) Wineglass of North Charleston, SC, Wilbur Simmons of Scranton, SC, Jerome Drayton of New Mexico, Ramona (John) Jenkins and Lionel (Pamela) Mazyck both of Moncks Corner, SC, Victor (Brenda) Mazyck of North Charleston, SC, Winfred (Margaret) Mazyck of Fort Washington, MD and Tracy (Shantelle) Mazyck of Goose Creek, SC; fifty-one (51) grandchildren; seventy-six (76) great-grandchildren; one great, great-grandchild; one brother, Pinckney Mack (Serena) Simmons of Cordesville, SC; three sisters, Christina Cureton and Geneva Laboon both of Greenville, SC and Lucille Simmons of Cordesville, SC; one daughter-in-law, Shirley Simmons; five brothers-in-law, Norman and Herman Brightman both of New York, Willie Fludd of Cordesville, SC, Jasper (Vernetta) Bryant of Charleston, SC and Cleveland (Dora) Bryant of Moncks Corner, SC; three sisters-in-law, Victoria Dixon of Cordesville, SC, Lillian Simmons Dixon and Margie Brightman both of New York; one goddaughter, Marie Gibbs of Cordesville, SC; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
