Obituary

Joseph Mazyck was born on October 6, 1929 to the late Edwin E. and Gold Roosevelt Waring Mazyck in Eutawville, South Carolina. He departed his earthly life and gained his heavenly wings on Saturday, February 13, 2021 at Summerville Community Hospice House surrounded by his children.

Joseph was educated in the Berkeley County School System.  After graduation he enlisted in the military serving in the U.S. Army and received an honorable discharge. On January 31, 1958, he was united in holy matrimony to the late Mary Julia Nelson. He retired after many years from Georgia-Pacific Corporation in Russellville, SC. After retirement, he cared for his grandchildren and made sure they were taken care of after school.

Joseph gave his life to Christ at an early age and became a member of Jehovah Baptist Church. He served on the Trustee Board, ordained as Deacon in 1987 and served as church Sexton for many years. He was a dedicated, faithful Deacon to his members and also served as Chairman of the Deacon Board until his health began to fail. He played a role in the creation of the church cemetery and assisted with the many church renovations. He served as the Treasurer of the St. James Union for many years. He was also an active member of the Antioch Baptist Association (ABA).

Joseph was a farmer all of his life, raising livestock to include cows, pigs, chickens, guineas and geese. He grew many crops; rice, soybeans, tobacco, corn, peanut, white potatoes, sweet potatoes, cucumbers and various vegetables for his devoted wife's garden. You would always find him wearing his overalls and work boots. He was known to be a hard worker and made sure his children were on the "rise and shine team".

In his later years, he loved wearing his suspenders and flannel shirts because he was always cold. He also enjoyed watching TV Land and listening to the songs of Lee Williams and Pastor Henry Dixon. He enjoyed eating shrimp and ribs, peanuts, Ritz Crackers, Hershey's with Almonds.

He was a "Gentle Giant"…small on words but big in presence.

Joseph was preceded in death by his wife, two sons, Joseph Jr. and Travis Mazyck; siblings, Anderson (Lendme) Mazyck, Abraham Mazyck, Eugene (Margaret) Mazyck, Franklin (Mary Lee) Mazyck, Flora (Gabriel) Laval, Robersine (Jacob) Stone, Robert (Mary Belle) Mazyck and Willie Edwin Mazyck Jr.

Joseph leaves to cherish his memories, his children, Rev. Florence (Arthur) Butler, Leola Jenkins, Bobby (Barbara) Ravenell, Shirley (Larry) Bryant, Joanne (Min. Brant) Nichols, Elder Herman Eli (Min. Stephanie) Mazyck, Patricia (Wendell) Grant, Juanita Pennye Mazyck, Lynette (Lamar) Alston; daughter-in-Law, Lisa (Julius) Freeman; siblings, Florence Brewton, Addie Mazyck, Ann Rebecca Ravenell, Julia Belle (Samuel) Boyd, Myrtle (William) Nelson and Vida Joy Mazyck; brother-in-laws, Min.
