Derek Keith Brightman was born on July 18, 1959 to Norman Sr., and Margie Brightman. He was the second child born of this union. He departed this life on October 21, 2016, at Lincoln Hospital, Bronx, New York after a brief illness.
Derek attended P.S. 101 Elementary School and Haaren High School in New York City. At the age of 16, Derek began his career as a page at the New York Public Library, where after 40 years of dedicated service, he retired as a supervisor on July 18, 2014.
Derek , an avid reader, especially enjoyed reading the Bible. His overall love for books and of knowledge resulted in him being well versed in multiple subjects; which made for interesting conversations with family and friends. He was also a cycling enthusiast who cycled with his friends weekly. In addition, Derek was highly influenced by the musical talents of his uncles. An influence Derek demonstrated as a skilled bassist. He also loved attending concerts. Notably, Derek was a generous and loving person who enjoyed helping others.
Derek leaves to cherish his memory: his loving parents, Norman Sr., and Margie Brightman; two brothers, Norman Jr., and Kevin Brightman; four aunts, Pearl Wilkins of Bronx, NY, Annette Robinson of San Diego, CA, Sharon Holbert of Los Angeles, CA and Esther Freeman (George) of Johns Island, SC; six uncles, Herman Brightman of Central Islip, NY, Willie Fludd of Cordesville, SC, Augusta Robinson (Kay) of Bronx, NY, Francis Robinson of Brooklyn, NY, Prince Robinson (Rebecca) of Bronx, NY and Julius Robinson (Valerie) of Wadmalaw Island, SC; special friends, Elizabeth Vargas, Steve Davis, Louis Mendez, and Anthony Gordon, as well as a host of cousins and other family connections.
