Obituary

Dorothy Campbell White, nicknamed "Dot", was born into the world four days before Christmas on December 21, 1933 in Cherry Hill, South Carolina. Sister Dot was the youngest of nine children born to Willie and Sarah Campbell; this allotted her many benefits. Often it kept Dorothy from the hot fields and into the books. Her siblings often adorned her with gifts, which led to her love of clothes, shoes, handbags and lets not forget her many hats.

Dorothy, better known as Dot, Mom, Grandmommy, Aunt Dot and our favorite "Monkey" (a nickname given to her by her Dad) attended Berkeley Training High School. She then went on to the historical black college, Voorhees College in Denmark, SC, where she studied Early Childhood Education.

In 1954, during the era of the African Americans great migration to the North, Dorothy packed her bags and headed for the bright lights of New York City. Dorothy quickly found work at a bookstore and soon met her husband of 51 years, Jake White, Jr. They began life as a couple in Brooklyn, NY and soon their family expanded to include their two daughters, Barbara Denise and Jacqueline. Often referred to as Jake, Dot, and the Girls, their years were filled with many joyous memories and Dorothy's down home cooking, especially her "Mac and Cheese." Throughout the years, there were many outings, parties and social events filled with many family and friends.

Dorothy's roots were well grounded in church and as such, she was a member of Bethel Tabernacle Church in Brooklyn, NY and Calvary Zion AME Church in Queens, NY. She joined the choir where she was able to use her wondrous singing voice. In 1997, Jake and Dorothy retired and returned to their hometown where they settled in Summerville, SC and Dorothy joined Mt. Carmel AME Church where she was an active member.

Dorothy has now peacefully joined her loved ones who preceded her in death including: her husband, Jake White, Jr.; brothers, Rev. Eddie Campbell, Norris Campbell, Sr., Benjamin Campbell, Daniel Campbell, Lewis Campbell and Harold Campbell; and sisters, Edith Lambright and Jean Rivers.

Dorothy leaves to cherish her memories: two devoted children, Barbara Denise Carrington of Charleston, SC and Jacqueline Taylor of Lawrenceville, GA; two sons-in-law, Larry Carrington and Mitchell Andrew Taylor; grandson, Mitchell Andrew Taylor, II; granddaughter, Sydney Denise Taylor; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
