Obituary

Edward James Fashion entered into eternal rest on March 24, 2013. He was born on November 11, 1921, in Moncks Corner, South Carolina, son of the late Victor Sinclair and Mary Cooper Fashion. He was the second oldest of five children. Edward James grew up in the Cherry Hill Community where he attended the Cherry Hill School and completed his education at Berkeley Training School in Moncks Corner, South Carolina. In the early 1930s, he joined Mt. Carmel African Methodist Episcopal Church. He dedicated his life to serving the Lord. He served diligently in the following capacities: Member of the Steward Board, Church Clerk and Leader of Class No. 7. On December 28, 1942, he was drafted to serve in the United States Army where he served as Corporal for 3 years and 2 months. The most rewarding aspect of his military service was receiving an Honorable Discharge (1946), having an outstanding record and receiving the Good Conduct Medal for victory in World War II. Edward James dedicated 36 loyal years to the Federal Government Services at the Naval Supply Center, Charleston, South Carolina. He received special accomplishment awards such as: Incentive Award (8-10-1958), Certificate of Award for Combined Federal Campaign Signs (1966-1967), Sustained Superior Performance Award (11-1-1968), Building 1127 received Warehouse of the Month (1973 & 1975), and in 1973 & 1976, he received a Letter of Appreciation. At the Naval Supply Center, his first job was a Packer & Crater worker, then a Packer & Crater Foreman and finally he became the first African American to become an Inspector of Packing & Preservation. On February 24, 1946, he was married to Earline Manigault. Out of this harmonious marriage, they were blessed with four children: Valerie D. Fashion, Edward C. "Rickey" Fashion, Sylvia F. Rose and Mashell Y. Fashion. He also has an eldest daughter, Marcella Wigfall Alexander. Edward James accepted the position of Leader of Class No. 7 with illustrious honor in 1963, when his uncle, Jim Fashion could no longer fulfill his duties. By accepting this position, he knew it came with great responsibility. He also knew this position required motivation, honesty and timeliness in order to get the job done. He served as Leader of Class No. 7 for 44 years and relinquished this position on January 13, 2008. He felt that his position as a Class Leader was to lead and guide his members in a Christian environment, instill biblical principles in their lives and set good examples for all of the members of his class to follow. Edward James was preceded in death by his wife, Earline Manigault Fashion; parents, Victor S. Fashion, Sr. and Mary Cooper Fashion; his beloved sisters, Pansy Fashion Conner and Mattie Fashion Campbell and foster brother, Sammie Thompson. He leaves to cherish his loving memories: his children, Marcella Alexander (Heyward) of Roosevelt, NY, Valerie D. Fashion of Newport News, VA, Edward C. Fashion of Moncks Corner, SC, Sylvia F. Rose (Melvin) of Moncks Corner, SC and Mashell Y. Fashion of Hephzibah, GA; two brothers, Isaiah R.
