Edward Sumter, 82, of Detroit Michigan, went to be with the Lord on April 11, 2012, at Oakwood Hospital in Dearborn, MI, surrounded by his loving family. He was born October 29, 1929, in Saint Stephen, South Carolina, the son of the late Lula and Charles Sumpter. He was one of nine siblings. On July 15, 1953, he married Willie Mae McKelvey. They were married in Detroit, Michigan. He worked as a construction laborer in the 50's. In the 60's, he worked as a forklift operator for The Chrysler Auto Company until he retired in 1992. Mr. Sumter was a member of The United Auto Workers Union. He was also a member of Unity Baptist Church in Detroit, MI. Edward is survived by his wife, Willie Mae McKelvey Sumter; his son and daughter-in-law, Curtis and Dorinda Sumter of Redford, Michigan; stepson and daughter-in-law, Jonathan and Barbara McKelvey of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina; sisters, Leola Brownfield of Detroit, Michigan and Earlene Cooper of New York; his brother, Hezekiah Sumter; his grandchildren, Demarcus and Andrea Sumter of Detroit, Michigan, Joey McKelvey and his wife Andrea, NaDene Horry and her husband, Clinton, Tonya McKelvey White and her husband, Durward; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Mr. Sumter was preceded in death by daughter, Eunice; his brothers, Rufus and Wesley Sumter; his sisters, Albertha Bowens, Ethel Sumpter, and Celia Jane Green; and his grandson Elbert Betts. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Beloved Friend, Husband, Companion We've been together 58 years, and it's hard to lose you; but God saw that you were getting weary and tired.
