IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Elijah Joshua
Morton
December 21, 1937 – November 6, 2021
Mr. Elijah Joshua Morton was born December 21, 1937 in Moncks Corner, South Carolina to the late Josh and Mazie Morton.
Elijah was educated in the public schools of Dorchester County. Being one to always make sure his family was well taken care of, he worked at the International Longshoreman Association (ILA) in Charleston, SC for 35 years before retiring.
Elijah accepted Christ at an early age and was an active and devoted member of Greater St. James AME Church where he faithfully served on the Trustee Board and was a member of the Parking Lot Ministry.
He will be remembered as a loyal and dedicated worker throughout the community. That is his legacy cultivated over a lifetime. Elijah was known by many and well-loved by all who knew him. He would stop to help anyone whom he perceived might need a helping hand, and he did not limit that aid to people. His love for his pets and other animals (all God's creature) assured that they too would be privy to the kindness, or dare we say, Grace, that was Elijah.
His passion for baseball is also cemented in the minds of those in the community who took interest in the sport. Elijah loved to watch the action and cheer for the Atlanta Braves. He also enjoyed watching wrestling on TV, while performing some of the moves. His favorite food was lima beans and corn bread. As a public servant, Elijah was a devoted member of the Berkeley County Progressive League.
On October 18, 1984, Elijah was joined in Holy Matrimony to the former Mary Lee Limehouse. This union was blessed with 37 years of marriage.
On Saturday, November 6, 2021, while at his earthly home, God, in His infinite wisdom, summoned Elijah to his home, not made by hands … eternal in the heavens. He joined his late parents; his brothers, Evans Morton and Oliten Morton; his sisters, Verda Simmons and Nancy Smith; stepchildren, Ricky Wiggs and Sadie Wiggs Heyward.
Elijah is survived by: his wife, Mary Lee Morton of Moncks Corner, SC; three sons, Rodney Mack (Priscilla) of Moncks Corner, SC, Sheldon Miller (Stephanie) of Charleston, SC and Jermaine Morton of Moncks Corner, SC; one daughter, Princess Morton of Moncks Corner, SC; four stepchildren, Wiley Wiggs of Jacksonville, FL, Evelyn Palmer, Patricia Heyward and Jerome Wiggs all of Moncks Corner, SC; three sisters-in-law, Cecile Morton and Sarah Limehouse both of Moncks Corner, SC and Ella Mae Thomas of New York, NY; five grandchildren, Devonte Miller and Zana Miller both of Atlanta, GA, Morgan Mack, Semaja Morton and Marilyn Robinson all of Moncks Corner, SC; special cousin, Charlie Simmons Sr. of (Longridge) Moncks Corner, SC; special friend, Wilson Brown of Moncks Corner, SC; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
