Mrs. Elizabeth Chandler, daughter of the late Charley and Lucy Bowers Smith, was born November 3, 1921 in Berkeley County, South Carolina. Elizabeth received her education in the public schools of Berkeley County. She was a professional homemaker. She was employed at Carolina Nursery for several years. Elizabeth was a long standing member of Zion United Methodist Church, now New Light United Methodist Church, where she was a member of the Choir and the Kitchen Committee. She also served as President of the Usher Board for several years. On January 12, 2010, Elizabeth left her family and friends to go to her final resting place in heaven. Those left to cherish her memories are: three sons, William (Barbara) Chandler and Walter (Bessie) Chandler both of Bronx, NY and John Chandler of Hartford, CT; three daughters, Ruth Paulin of Hartford, CT, Janette Chandler and Barbara C. Wiggs both of South Carolina; twenty-two grandchildren; fifty great-grandchildren and seven great, great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends. Special acknowledgement to longtime friends, George Anna Dawson, Edward Croker, Inetha Dingle and Flo Shirah; two special daughters, Gloria Gillard and Shirley Matthews; and son, Alfonso Sumpter; and a very special thank you to Robert and Johnnie Ruth Sumpter.
