IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Elizabeth Jager
Wigfall
December 12, 1927 – July 3, 2020
A TIME TO BE BORN...
Elizabeth "Liz" or "Baby", the daughter of Fred and Susan Jager, was born in Pineville, South Carolina on December 12, 1927.
A TIME TO LOVE...
After moving to New York, Elizabeth met and married Willie Wigfall in 1951. To this union were born two children - Denise Susan and Sidney Gregory.
A TIME TO EVERY PURPOSE UNDER THE HEAVEN ...
Elizabeth attended elementary school in Berkeley and Charleston counties and high school at Voorhees High School, an Episcopal boarding school in Denmark, South Carolina. Upon graduation, Elizabeth moved to New York where she began her career in social work. Determined to further her education, Elizabeth returned to South Carolina and Voorhees College to pursue an advanced degree.
After graduating from Voorhees College with a degree in History, Elizabeth matriculated at The University of Georgia, in Athens, Georgia, and, subsequently, South Carolina State University (SCSU) where she earned a Master's Degree in Vocational Rehabilitation. Later, Elizabeth returned to New York and resumed her work in public service as a Probation Officer in Family Court. She retired in 2014 after many years of dedicated service.
She was a true matriarch not only to her family but also in her work, community, and church. Elizabeth enthusiastically supported causes such as civil rights, education, and service to her community including through the NAACP and National Council for Negro Women. For example, she also served as a Trustee in her home church in Bronx, New York, and she assisted in founding the Bronx, New York, Voorhees College Alumni Chapter.
Elizabeth loved to cook! It was both a passion and a gift. Her loved ones enjoyed her scrumptious (and legendary) sweet potato pie. Her greatest passion, however, was her family. She always had time for those nearest and dearest to her heart, her family and friends as well as those in need.
A TIME TO DIE...
Having lived a beautiful life and completing her mission on Earth, Elizabeth was summoned from her labor to eternal rest Friday, July 3, 2020, at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, South Carolina.
A TIME TO MOURN...
Elizabeth leaves to mourn her loss: her son, Sidney Wigfall (daughter-in-law Natacha) of Naperville, Illinois; son-in-law, Jerry Smith (daughter Denise, predeceased) of Upper Marlboro, Maryland; grandchildren, Jacqueline and Nicole Smith, Nicholas and Samantha Wigfall; great-grandchildren, Cristian Smith-Little and Jaylen Moore; sisters, Leola Spencer and Wilhelmina Moore; and a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
Her Graveside Service will be held Saturday, July 11, 2020, 10:00 a.m., at Mexico Cemetery, Pineville, SC. As per CDC guidelines for COVID-19, please wear a mask, practice social distancing and wash/sanitize hands. Thank you for your understanding and prayers during this time.
