Emily Vivian Cooper Jones, 85, transitioned from this life on September 15, 2016. Emily, the daughter of Samuel and Jettie Cooper, was born January 29, 1931 at home in the Berkeley County community of Cherry Hill. She attended the Berkeley County School System, graduating and earning her Bachelor of Art Degree in Elementary Education from South Carolina State University in 1953. Emily continued her studies to earn a Master's Degree in Speech Pathology from Indiana University and additional certificates and licenses from the University of South Carolina and The Citadel.
Emily was united in holy matrimony to Samuel A. Jones, affectionately known as Sammy. She was a dedicated mother of three sons.
Emily was a founding member of The Moncks Corner Chapter (Kappa Alpha Zeta Chapter) of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated. She was a member of Mt. Carmel AME Church where the Emily C. Jones Women's Missionary Society was named in her honor because of her unprecedented service. She also served on Stewardess Board No. 2. She organized the Cherry Hill Community Center restoration project. Emily dedicated her life to education, for her love of children was immeasurable. She enjoyed serving others, believed in the equality of all, and was an advocate that gave voice to those who had none.
Emily was preceded in death by her husband, parents, and several siblings.
She leaves to cherish her memory, her sons, Robert Cooper (Barbara), Walton Jones, Ben Maurice Jones (Antoinette); grandchildren, Nikki, Erroll, Asha, and Ben "BJ"; three great-grandchildren, MaTia, Makayla, and Erroll Jr.; two sisters, Juanita "Lee" C. Hamilton and Azalee C. Green; and a multitude of nieces, nephews, cousins, and family and friends.
