Obituary

"Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me. In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also." John 14:1-3 Evelyn Smalls Legree, affectionately called "Nunna" by family and friends, was one of eight children born to the late William and Mary Owens Smalls on October 12, 1912 in Bonneau, SC. She departed this life on Sunday, November 25, 2012, at Providence Hospital in Washington, DC. In 1935, Evelyn joined in holy matrimony to the late Frank Legree, Sr. They were blessed with seven children: three sons and four daughters; three of whom, Mary Davis, Alma Dease and Sam Legree, preceded her in death. Evelyn received her education in Berkeley County pubic schools in Bonneau, SC. She accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior at an early age and initially became a member of Mt. Carmel A.M.E. Church in Bonneau, SC. She later joined White Chapel Holiness Church in Saint Stephen, SC. She loved to sing. Two of her favorite songs were "I'm Not Tired Yet" and "Look Where He Brought Me From." In 1965, Evelyn moved to Washington, DC and later became a member of The New Macedonia Baptist Church in Southeast, Washington, DC, under the pastorate of the late Reverend Dr. Robert L. Walls, Sr. and remained a faithful member under the current Senior Pastor, Reverend Patrick J. Walker. She served diligently with the Deaconess Ministry until she became immobile. She continued her worship at home and sang her spirituals every chance she got. In addition to being a spiritual servant, she enjoyed gardening, sewing, cooking for family and friends, caring for her grandchildren and weekly Saturday gatherings at her house. She spent many summers in South Carolina with her brothers, sisters, younger grandchildren and other relatives. In her later years, Evelyn anxiously awaited Thursday and Friday visits from two of her older grandchildren, Tony and Tracy. During those visits, she would continue to talk about the past and sing her spirituals. She was a true matriarch and enjoyed giving advice every chance she got. Those left to cherish her memory include: two sons, Frank (Emily) of Saint Stephen, SC, Theadore (Geraldine) of Hyattsville, MD; two daughters, Blondell Gibbs of Mitchellville, MD and Juanita (Marvin) Jones of Washington, DC; fourteen grandchildren; fifteen great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; one brother, Johnny (Essie) Smalls of Holly Hill, SC: and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
