He began as a Fortune and finished as a Champion.
Reverend Fortune "Champ" Haskell, was the second of ten children born to the late Reverend Frank and Edith Jenkins Haskell.
He grew up in Berkeley County, attending the Berkeley County public schools. He later moved to Orangeburg County where he completed his secondary education at Roberts High School, Holly Hill, SC. He pursued further studies at Denmark Technical College, Denmark, SC; Morris College School of Religion, Sumter, SC; and South Carolina State College (now University), Orangeburg, SC.
He was called to serve in the United States Army in 1953.
In 1960, he answered the call to gospel ministry and was licensed by Tabernacle Baptist Church, Eutawville, SC in 1961. He was ordained in 1964 under the pastorate of his father. His first assignment as pastor was in 1965 with Hill Zion Baptist Church, Holly Hill, SC, followed by Union Hill Baptist Church, Holly Hill, SC in the same year where he remained for 20 years. He then served as pastor of St. Mark Baptist Church, St. George, SC for 23 years. In 1980, he became pastor of St. Stephen Baptist Church, St. Stephen, SC and remained there for 20 years. In 1994, he became pastor of Tabernacle Baptist Church. He founded New Covenant Baptist Church, St. Stephen, SC in 2000. He remained as pastor of Tabernacle and New Covenant until the time of his transition from earth to Heaven.
Reverend Haskell previously served as: President of the Lovely Hill Baptist Sunday School Convention, Director General for the SC Baptist Congress of Christian Education and a member of the Board of Trustees at Morris College. Other previous assignment included: President of the St. James Union in Berkeley County, Statistician and member of the National Baptist Convention, USA, Inc., President of Morris College School of Religion, Instructor at Denmark Technical College, Supervisor of Plumbing at SC State College, Owner of Haskell's Plumbing and Owner of Haskell's Tours & Charters.
He was formerly married 42 years to Anna Ruth Wright Haskell. This union was blessed with four children. Anna Ruth, along with two of his children, Karen and Leonard "Moody" preceded him in death. His sister, Dorothy Bennett Jones also preceded him in death.
Those who will forever cherish loving memories and carry on his legacy are: his wife, Jeanette King Haskell; three daughters, Ray Ann Gillens, LaTonia Brothers (Kirby) and Fortrena Haskell; stepchildren, Kimberly Bolton, George M. Harrison and Karrie Sisk; siblings, Willie Mae Teasdale, Frank Haskell, Jr., Ellen Hillery, Ethel Crawford, Blondell Parrish, Rev. Elease Benton (James C.), Trudy Haskell and Aletha Morgan (Woodrow); grandchildren he reared in the home, Diera Haskell Bullard (Eddie) and Durrel A. Haskell; other grandchildren, Fred Gillens (Kesha), Fabian Brothers (Courtney), Christopher Haskell, Ryan Alston, Adrea Brothers and April Haskell; great-grandchildren, Jordan, Anna, Freddie, Kayleigh, Aubri, Trenton, Noah and Kinsley; fourteen grandchildren; three brothers-in-law; six sisters-in-law; many relatives and church family members.
