IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Francina
Simmons
October 6, 1940 – June 15, 2020
Francina Simmons, 79, departed this life and transitioned into eternal rest on June 15, 2020 at her home. Francina, often called Nina by those who loved her, was born October 6, 1940 to the late Peter and Julia Simmons. Before migrating to New York at an early age, she was educated in the Berkeley County School District, then later furthered her education in night school in New York.
Francina was a faithful member of First Reformed Episcopal Church where she served on the Chancel Guild, Missionary Society and on the Communion set-up team. She worked in the laundry service for many years before becoming an entrepreneur and doing what she loved - baking and styling hair. Her famous "rum" cake was sought after by many.
Francina was dedicated to her family, friends and community. She could often be found sitting tenant patrol in her building or making sure no one loitered in the hallway. Francina's home was open to all, with many of her nieces and nephews passing through.
After being in New York for over 40 years, Francina Simmons returned to her home in Moncks Corner where she joined and attended Rock Hill Baptist Church until she was unable to physically attend. Although unable to attend, she remained a faithful tither and giver to her home church.
Francina leaves behind a legacy of two daughters, Jacqueline Simmons, Moncks Corner, SC and Sharon Burgess (Rev. Gordon R. Burgess III), North Charleston, SC; five grandchildren, Justin Simmons, Brooklyn, NY, Izrae'l Burgess, Alexis Burgess, Joe'l Burgess and Faith Burgess all of North Charleston, SC. She is survived by two sisters, Corine Chavis and Rev. Thelma Perkins (Deacon John Perkins); two brothers, Peter Simmons Jr. and Elijah Simmons all of Moncks Corner, SC; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Viewing will be held Thursday, June 18, 2020 from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. at the funeral home. A private funeral service will be held Friday, June 19, 2020, 11:00 a.m., at the O. Allen Gethers Jr. Memorial Chapel, 200 Grace Street, Moncks Corner, SC. Burial will be in Simmons Estate Cemetery.
