Geneva Gibbs Codes was born on May 26, 1922, in the Hog Swamp Section of Pinopolis, South Carolina. She was the third child of Frederick and Susan Barfield Gibbs. She departed this life on Tuesday, March 11, 2014 in Moncks Corner, SC. Geneva received her education in the schools of Berkeley County, SC. In 1944, she married Leon J. Codes, Sr. This union was blessed with 13 children. Her husband and two children, Ida Spruill and Otis Codes, preceded her in death. Geneva received the baptism of the Holy Spirit at age 34. She was a member of Anderson Baptist Church for more than 65 years. She was also a member of the Senior Choir and served in whatever capacity she was needed. At her death, she was one of the oldest members of the church. Geneva, affectionately known to her siblings, children and relatives as "Boo", was widowed for 35 years. She was an excellent provider for her family and kept them all together. She was a caring and giving person who understood the concept of "It takes a village to raise a child." Along with the 13 children who she gave birth to, she reared two grandchildren in her home and nurtured many others. Her grandchildren affectionately called her "Grandma Boo." Geneva was the matriarch of the family and was a second mother to many of her nieces and nephews. She was well known in her community as someone who gave wise counsel. Her door was always open to all - she never met a stranger. Mother Geneva worked very hard as a domestic worker for many years. She would come home and redo the work her children had done because it did not meet her exceedingly high standards. Geneva Codes was NEVER late! She would be ready at 8 o'clock for a 10:30 appointment. "Grandma Boo" loved to cook and could whip up a meal in 30 minutes. She was famous for her finger lickin' good collard greens that she got from Cousin Tennie's garden. Her greens were loaded with hamhocks and neckbones. She will be missed by many, many family and friends, but those who will miss her most are her eleven children: Anna (Adam) Jamison, Rose Smith, Robert Codes, Mary (Jimmy) Chavis, Terry (Annette) Codes, Denise Diggs, Shirley Ann Codes, Leon, Jr. (Carolyn) Codes and Clayton Codes all of Moncks Corner, SC, Samuel (Barbara) Codes of Delaware and Fred (Marcy) Codes of Georgia; one sister, Daisy Dawson of Bronx, NY; three brothers, Fred Gibbs, Sr., Sass Burden both of Moncks Corner, SC and Joseph Gibbs of Philadelphia, PA; thirty-seven (37) grandchildren, fifty-nine (59) great-grandchildren and three (3) great-great-grandchildren; one close friend and sister-in-law, Alma Burden; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends. Others who mourn her passing are: sons-in-law, Otto Spruill and Norman Smith; sister-in-law, Louise Lewis; a life-long friend, Tennie Brown; and the Santee Circle Community that she was a part of for nearly a century.
