The Reverend Doctor George Louis West was born to the late Reverend Peter L. and Mrs. Louise J. West on August 17, 1944 in Moncks Corner, South Carolina. He was the fourth of five children. Rev. Dr. West was married to Mary L. Hall on November 28, 1970. Dr. West's early education began in Berkeley County, and he graduated from Russellville High School. He furthered his education at Claflin University, University of Maryland (Bachelor's Degree), Howard University in Washington, DC (Master's Degree in Theological Studies) and Eastern Seminary in Philadelphia, PA (Doctorate in Ministry, D. Min.)
Dr. West worked several jobs and held various managerial and professional positions which included AT&T and served as a Director of Pastoral Care at AnMed Health in Anderson, SC. Dr. West also taught Religious Studies at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, VA, New Hanover Regional Medical Center in Wilmington, NC and Cummins Memorial Theological Seminary in Summerville, SC. Dr. West had a love for farming so he returned to his roots in St. Stephen to start a small farming business, Go 2 George's Farm Produce.
At a young age, Dr. West accepted the Lord as his personal Savior at Good Shepherd Reformed Episcopal Church. Dr. West joined Welfare Baptist Church in Anderson, SC. Dr. West was affiliated with various churches in the Anderson and St. Stephen communities.
Dr. West was a member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Incorporated, Clinical Pastoral Care, the Rotary Club and the Chamber of Commerce. Dr. West loved to read, write, and travel. He was an avid photographer and expressed his opinions on social media.
Dr. West leaves to cherish his memories: his devoted wife, Mary L. West; daughter, Rosalind (Marcus) Culver; grandchildren, Marcus Jr. and Tina; sisters, Flora (Joseph) Gethers and Sarah L. West; aunt, Alberta Montgomery; brother-in-law, James (Rosalind) Hall; sister-in-law, Doris Davis; nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Dr. West was predeceased by: his parents, Rev. Peter and Mrs. Louise West; his brother, Bishop James C. (Miriam) West, Sr. and Rev. A. Rebecca West.
Viewing will be held Wednesday, March 17, 2021, 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home (Moncks Corner).
A Graveside Service will be held Thursday, March 18, 2021, 1:00 p.m., at Good Shepherd Reformed Episcopal Church Cemetery, 2898 North Highway 52, Bonneau, SC. The service will be live-streamed on our Facebook page at: https://www.facebook.com/gethersfh
