Obituary

Mrs. Geraldine Baylor Major, "a beautiful soul," known to most as Jerry, passed away with grace peacefully surrounded by her devoted daughter and grands at the age of 88 on January 17, 2023.  She was born February 17, 1934 in Moncks Corner, South Carolina.  She was an active member of Wesley United Methodist Church, Pinopolis, South Carolina where she served on the Usher Board.

Jerry was preceded in death by her parents, Rev. G.L. Baylor and Mrs. Edith L. Baylor; her husband, Sergeant First Class (Ret.), Harry Major, Army; a son, Ricky Major; and her brother, William "Duby" Baylor.

Jerry grew up with her siblings and lots of friends in Moncks Corner, South Carolina.  She enjoyed going to the movie theater, swing dancing, making floral arrangements for Baylor's Florist, and helping at Baylor's Grocery store.  At an early age, she became a member of the family's church, Graham AME, presently Moncks Corner AME, and graduated from Berkeley Training High School in 1952.  In that same year on July 10, she married her childhood sweetheart, Harry.  They were married for 59 years until his death.  They had one daughter, Harrietta and raised Ricky, a nephew as their own from his birth.  Harry served respectfully in the United States Army until his retirement.  His tour of duty required the family to live and travel in several foreign countries and states.

Upon returning to Moncks Corner, Jerry, who had taken some Early Childhood courses coupled with her great love of children became employed at the Coastal Center in Ladson, South Carolina.  She remained there until her retirement. Several years after retirement, Jerry enjoyed working at Lil Angel Childcare Center which was conveniently located next door to her residence.

Jerry will be remembered for her endless love for her family and friends.  She and Harrietta spent years together bonding as they were often alone when Harry was away serving our country. Jerry shared a wonderful and very special relationship with Lynn and Latonya. She loved and spoiled grands, Tia and Cedrick.  Then came the great grands to repeat the cycle.

Jerry was the family's "Auntie." She was the "go to Auntie." Her home was always opened.  No matter the time, her hospitality was gracious and immeasurable.  You were always assured of a meal at her home and a bed to bunk.

Jerry's great generosity of heart and spirit, her warmth, compassion, genuine love and concern will be missed by the many lives she touched.  We will forever love and miss her.

Those left to cherish and love her memories are her daughter, Mrs. Harrietta E. (Special Friend Willie Jackson) Jones; stepchildren, Ms. Gwendolyn Richardson and Mr. Anthony Johnson; goddaughter, Ms. LaTonya Hamilton; grandchildren, Bishop Cedrick J. (Shakinah) Major and Telsamia Major Harrison; great-grandchildren, Lonnie Harrison Jr., Zoe Harrison, Madison Major and Meaux Major; siblings, Mrs. Elease B. Moore, Mrs. Thomasena Baylor Staten, Mrs. Carol B. Greene and Mrs. Vera B. (Winston) Brown; sister-in-law, Mrs. Theola W. Baylor; and a host of relatives and friends.
