IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Gertie M.
Smith
February 3, 1932 – February 8, 2021
Mrs. Gertie Mae Smith was born February 3, 1932, in Moncks Corner, South Carolina, daughter of the late Sam and Rebecca Gibbs Mack.
Gertie was educated in the public schools of Berkeley County. Being a public servant, she performed various jobs throughout the community, primarily working at the Berkeley County Hospital as a Nurse's Aide. She also worked at Piggly Wiggly in Moncks Corner, SC for twenty-eight years until her retirement.
She became a member of Nazareth Reformed Episcopal Church at an early age. While attending Nazareth, she dutifully served on the Vestry Board, Senior Choir (past President), Missionary Society, and as Church Secretary. She was also a Sunday School Scholar and sang with the Berkeley Women's Choir.
Gertie was well loved by everyone and known by many. She would stop to help anyone whom she perceived might need a helping hand. She loved her family, church family and had a heart for the community. Her passion for football and basketball was well documented as she supported the Berkeley High School Stags, cheering at the excitement and often travelling with the team to away games.
In April 1968, Gertie was joined in Holy Matrimony to Ernest C. Smith. This union was blessed with 52 years of marriage.
On Monday, February 8, 2021, at Trident Hospital in Charleston, SC, Gertie was called home by the Lord in His infinite wisdom. She joined her parents; her sister, Lula Mae Mack; her brothers, Buster Lewis Mack, David Alvin Mack, and Leroy Mack, Sr.
