Obituary

Gilbert Alfred Carter of Moncks Corner, South Carolina, transitioned on October 31, 2019 after a long battle with cancer. He was born on July 18, 1943 in Frostburg, Maryland, the third child of Dorothy Davis Carter and Chester Leroy Carter. He was the grandson of Harry Carter and Mary L. Carter. They raised him from the age of two.

Gilbert was educated in the public schools in Frostburg and graduated from Beall High School in 1961. He loved sports and participated in soccer, basketball and track while in high school. Gil enlisted in the United States Air Force in July 1961 and served his country for four years. His last assignment was in Alaska.

Gilbert moved to New York after his honorable discharge from the military. He worked numerous jobs before retiring, including the New York City Police Department and the United States Postal Service. He also owned his own delivery service.

Gilbert began his walk with God at Dickerson A.M.E. Church, Frostburg, Maryland, where he sang in the children's choir. While in New York, he was an avid church goer and was a member of the Greater Allen A.M.E. Church. Upon moving to Moncks Corner, South Carolina, Gilbert transferred his membership to Mt. Carmel A.M.E. Church where he served on the Trustee Board and loved working with the team of men who landscaped around the church and maintained the cemetery.

Gilbert met Yvonne Cooper Knight in 2002, and they were married in 2010 and relocated to the Cherry Hill Community in Moncks Corner, South Carolina. When he moved to Cherry Hill, Gil immediately became a Cherry Hillian. He loved the land and was a member of the Cherry Hill Community Committee. He was diligent and dedicated to his work in the community and the "Classroom". He helped install the floors and restored the original benches from this historic building.

Gil loved genealogy and spent years collecting information and building the family tree. He compiled a massive album of family pictures dating back to the early 1900s. He was considered to be the Family Historian by many. He had a great love for planting flowers and keeping his yard immaculate. Gil loved going to the movies, Broadway plays and traveling with his lovely wife. He and Yvonne loved antiquing and hitting as many restaurants as possible. He was easy going and enjoyed life.

He leaves to mourn and cherish their memories: his wife, Yvonne Cooper Knight-Carter of Moncks Corner, SC; stepchildren, Lamont (Anesha) of Greensboro, NC and Dwayne (Samia) of Moncks Corner, SC; mother-in-law, Elizabeth J. Cooper of Moncks Corner, SC; sister-in-law, Eleanor C. Brown of Georgia; step-grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He is survived by three siblings, Mary L. Carter of Jamaica, NY, Chester L. Carter (Octavia) of Laurelton, NY and Connie (Leonard) Usher of Ridge, NY.
