Hazel Mae Chisolm Nelson, daughter of the late Edmond and Lottie Blathers-Boone Samuel, was born on October 14, 1942 in Darlington County, South Carolina. She peacefully transitioned into eternal rest on Monday, April 16, 2018.
Hazel received her formal education in the public schools of Darlington County and was a graduate of Spaulding High School, Class of 1960. She was Salutatorian of her class.
Hazel relocated to Newark, New Jersey in the early 1960s'. There, she was gainfully employed as a sales clerk at Macy's Department Store for many years until her retirement.
Hazel was united in marriage to Paul Chisolm. This union was blessed with four children. Several years after the death of Paul, she was united in marriage to Joseph Nelson. Hazel and Joseph experienced a wonderful relationship until his demise.
Hazel was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church, where she worshipped regularly.
Playing cards (Spades), watching soap operas and playing Pokeno with family members were some of her favorite pastimes. Hazel was extremely jovial. She dearly loved her family and friends. All her visits and phone conversations concluded with the words, "Love you!" Family members and friends will deeply miss her.
Those remaining to share fond memories are: her children, Paul Chisolm, Jr., Retired Master Sergeant Vernon (Deshana) Chisolm, Retired Master Sergeant Keith (Cheryl) Chisolm and Fairlynn Chisolm; eleven grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; siblings, Louellen Solomon, Edmond (Sarah) Samuel and Patricia (Troy) Lyde; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws and friends.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Alphonso Samuel.
