Helen Linda Brown Haynes, cordially known as "Red", was born September 28, 1958 in Moncks Corner, South Carolina. She was a daughter of Lillie Mae Jenkins Brown and Joe Brown. On Monday morning, March 16, 2020, at 12:17 a.m., she was received in the arms of her Heavenly Father, at Roper Hospital, Charleston, SC.
Helen received her education in the Berkeley County Public Schools and graduated from Berkeley High School in 1975. After graduating, she was a full-time mom and then later she began to work. She was employed at Cruiser Restaurant and later became employed by the Berkeley County School District and Walmart. She worked at Berkeley Middle School for 18 years, and due to health issues, she retired from both jobs.
A loving mother and homemaker, Helen was a remarkable cook and enjoyed preparing meals for her family and friends. She also loved sewing, knitting and dancing. She would watch tutorials for cooking and sewing in her spare time.
Helen was also a dedicated and faithful member of Moncks Corner AME Church. She was an active member of the Booster Club, Stewardess Board #2, the Ensemble Choir, Session Gillians Women's Missionary Society and the Health Ministry until her health declined. She loved children, and spent her summers and days with her grands and other children who were a part of the church's children summer camp.
Helen was preceded in death by her parents; son, Richard Lee Haynes Jr.; sisters, Lillian Gadsden and Drucilla Brown; and brother, Joseph "Fatboy" Brown.
Helen is survived by her children, Billy Haynes (Columbia, SC), Hellenia Haynes (Summerville, SC), and Donnell Haynes(Moncks Corner, SC); stepson, Reginald Thompson (Charleston, SC); seventeen grandchildren and one great-grandchild; brothers, Joe Brown (Newark, NJ), James Brown (Columbia, SC), Willie R. (Belinda) Anderson, Sr. (Philadelphia, PA); sisters-in-law, Ida Davis, Ermena Marion, Susan Major (Donald); brother-in-law, Gerald Haynes; her children's father and friend, Richard L. Haynes, Sr.; goddaughter, Kadijah Winns; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives and friends.
Celebration of Life service will be held Saturday, March 21, 2020, 1:00 p.m., at Moncks Corner AME Church, Moncks Corner, SC. Burial, St. James Cemetery. Viewing will be Friday from 3:00 - 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
