Obituary

Henry Heyward affectionately called "Daddy" was the tenth of twenty-two children born to Ms. Ella Manner and Mr. Richard Rivers on September 1, 1926 in Ridgeland, SC. He departed this life on Thursday, April 23, 2009 at his residence in Jamestown, SC. He attended Zion Oak Grove Baptist Church with his family and became a member at an early age. After graduating from Good Hope High School in Ridgeland, SC, he enlisted in the United States Army at the age of seventeen and served his country for twenty-two years. After being discharged, he relocated to Philadelphia where he met and married Eunice Brown. After relocating to South Carolina, he was employed at O.L. Thompson Construction Company as a Master Cement Finisher and retired after fifty years of dependable service. Henry and Eunice in their union raised three granddaughters and also founded Christ Community Church in Alvin, SC where Eunice served as Pastor and Henry was the Head Deacon for many years. Pastor Eunice Heyward was called to rest in November 2002. Elder Gibbs came up under Deacon Heyward and got the Holy Ghost and then the Lord called him to become a minister. The Lord made a miracle in the life of Gloria Wilson under the leadership of Deacon Heyward, where she turned her life over to God and now she is the First Lady of the church and now she is here to celebrate with us during his home-going service. He later was united in marriage to Annel Wade in April 2003. Through this union, they re-opened the church and changed the name to New Birth Deliverance Ministries with Bishop Jerome Wilson as Pastor; Henry as the Head Deacon and Annel as the Church Mother. Henry also became a patriarch figure among the residents of the Lil' Owl Care Assistance Program for the Homeless founded by his wife Annel. He was preceded in death by twenty-one siblings; parents; two granddaughters and two grandsons. He leaves to cherish his memory: his loving wife, Annel Wade Heyward; children, Mary (Palmer) Carter, Todd (Barbara) Smith, Valerie Smith, Henry Jackson, Tonya (Cephus) Addison, Kirjery Butler, and Faith Butler all of South Carolina, Brenda Heyward of Arizona, Bobbie (Leroy) Este, Loretta Heyward, Mae Anderson, Albert Jackson, David Hartwell and Sara Hartwell of Phildelphia, PA, Lillian (Ollie) Usher, LaMel (Anita) Smith and Jerry Butler Smith all of California; adopted son, Samuel Gilliard; thirty grandchildren; thirty-five great grandchildren; special brother, Harold Washington; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
