Ida Gibbs Spruill, the daughter of Geneva Gibbs Codes, was born on September 28, 1941 in McBeth, South Carolina. Her father preceded her in death. She was the oldest of twelve children. She went home to be with The Lord on April 3, 2013. Ida was educated in the public schools of Berkeley County. Upon graduation, she moved to Long Island, New York. At an early age, through her grandfather, Fredrick Gibbs, Ida became a member of Mt. Carmel A.M.E. Church. While living in New York, she became one of the first members of Faith Baptist Church where she held many positions and participated in numerous organizations. Ida worked as a caregiver for several years; she was then employed by Helena Rubenstein as a cosmetic sales representative. On November 14, 1970, she met and married the love of her life, Otto Spruill, Jr. From this union, six children were born. She gave up working outside the home to raise her children. One son, Khalid, preceded her in death. Ida was blessed with the gift of giving. She was a nurturer from a very young age. She was instrumental in helping out with her siblings. It seemed like Christmas every week because like clockwork there was a package in the mail with clothing for her younger siblings. In 1979, she and her family relocated to South Carolina. Upon her return, she was employed at Short Stay where she was Supervisor of Housekeeping for ten years. Her last employment was at Wal-Mart in management. Ida renewed her membership at Mt. Carmel A.M.E. Church upon her return from New York. She served on many auxiliaries including: the Usher Board, The Spiritual Wings Choir and The Daughters of Sarah. She served faithfully until her illness prevented her from attending. Ida loved singing, and she could sing. Two of her favorite songs that she led were "Packing Up, Getting Ready To Go" and "Sweeping Through The City." Ida loved to cook, crochet, tell stories, solve word puzzles, and read her Bible. Most importantly, she loved being around her family. Ida was a very humble, loving, caring, and mild tempered person.
