Iona Garnett Hartfield was born October 4, 1949 in Moncks Corner, South Carolina. She was the youngest of eight children born to George Garnett, Sr. and Rebecca Gilbert Garnett. Iona departed this life on September 9, 2021 at her home.
Iona loved learning ever since she was a small child, tagging behind her two older sisters to their two-room schoolhouse. In 1966, she graduated from Berkeley Training High (now Berkeley High). In 1988, she graduated from Charleston Southern University with a Bachelor of Science degree. She earned an MBA from Webster University School of Business in 2005. Iona worked for the Department of Social Services in Adult Protective Services for 32 years, as well as for Lincoln Heritage Insurance and Bankers Life Insurance.
Iona loved people and her community and was very active with Bethlehem Reformed Episcopal Church as Choir Director and Senior Missionary President. A highlight for her was traveling to Germany as a delegate.
Iona was preceded in death by: her parents; brothers, John Henry Garnett and George Garnett, Jr.; and sister, Bernice Garnett Gillard.
Those left to cherish her memory are: her daughter, Torschia Garnett; siblings, Reverend Fred Garnett (Linda), Mr. Joseph Garnett (Lillian), Mr. Ulysses Garnett and Mrs. Vornedda Alls (Ernest); and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
A Memorial Service will be held Monday, September 20, 2021, 1:00 p.m., at the O. Allen Gethers Jr. Memorial Chapel, Gethers Funeral Home, 200 Grace Street, Moncks Corner, SC. Face masks are required. The family is grateful for your understanding and prayers during this difficult time.
