IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Isaac Mannie
Reid
March 24, 1929 – November 16, 2025
Isaac Mannie Reid, a man who believed in living life to the fullest, passed away peacefully with his family by his side in Mechanicsville, Virginia on November 16, 2025, at the age of 96.
Ike, the youngest child of the late William Reid and Catherine Smalls Reid, was the last surviving child from their union. Ike was born on March 24, 1929, in Moncks Corner, South Carolina.
Ike was raised during the Great Depression and Jim Crow and came of age in a time that called for strength, resilience and courage. At an early age, he became a member of Grace Reformed Episcopal Church in Moncks Corner, South Carolina. In his later years, he was a member of St. Paul Community Church, New York, New York; St. Paul AME Church, Rockville Centre, New York; and New Beginnings Church, Mechanicsville, Virginia.
Upon completion of high school in Berkeley County, South Carolina, he relocated to New York City. He answered the call of service to his country by joining the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. After serving his country with distinction, he received an honorable discharge. His dedication to duty and quiet integrity earned him the respect of those who served alongside him.
Ike's life was defined by his integrity, work ethic and intuition. After his military service, Ike returned to New York and built a successful career spanning over 30 years in New York City's Garment District with N. Erlanger, Blumgart and Co. He was an endless resource and an asset to his colleagues. Known for his sharp eye for quality fabrics, tireless work ethic, and loyal leadership, he became a trusted figure in an industry that valued craftsmanship and hustle. He often travelled internationally to conduct business on behalf of the company. At the time, Ike was one of only a few African Americans to hold such an important import/export position in the New York garment industry.
Outside of work, Isaac lived a life rich in purpose and tradition. In 1976, he married Doris Aiken, who had an equally exquisite eye for fabrics and fashion. They raised one daughter and travelled the world together. They enjoyed a fulfilling 45 years together before her passing in 2022.
Ike Reid committed his life to the Most Worshipful Prince Hall Grand Lodge (MWPHGL) of the State of New York. Ike was raised to the Sublime Degree of Master Mason in Meridian Lodge #93 on April 13, 1974, in a class of 12 brothers. He served as Worshipful Master in 1986. Shortly after serving as Assistant Grand Secretary, he was ultimately elected to serve as Right Worshipful Grand Secretary of the MWPHGL of New York for many years. Due to his many years of service to the Grand Lodge, he was bestowed the honor of being adorned with the title Most Worshipful Past Grand Master. He reached the highest level that a Prince Hall Mason can attain, that of the Thirty-Third and Last Degree.
His lovely wife was also inspirational to the Craft. Doris joined Meridian Chapter #67, Order of the Eastern Star, Prince Hall Affiliated in 1991. In December 1994, she was elected to the highest office within the Chapter and served as Worthy Matron in 1995 and 1996.
Ike was also an avid outdoorsman who found joy and solitude in the woods and on the water. He was admired for being a good hunter and fisherman, but admired more for being an even better card player.
Ike will be remembered for his unshakable principles, his sense of humor and the deep love he held for his family and country. We would be remiss if we did not include his love of a good time, which often included Dewar's 12 and Cohibas! His legacy of service, loyalty and hard work endures in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
Isaac is survived by his loving daughter, Dr. Renee Reid (Timothy Handy); beloved granddaughter, Marnae; devoted nieces, Ruth Reid and Margretta Reid Fairweather; as well as a multitude of family members and friends, who will miss him dearly.
The last excursion that Ike made out of the house was to vote for the Governor of Virginia on November 4, 2025. We built a ramp, bundled him up and took him, because he said that he didn't want to die without casting his vote. In that vein, please understand that he followed current events closely (his mind was sharp) and he would not want anyone to put themselves in danger in order to attend this home-going service. At the time of his death, he worried about the state of our nation and the lack of respect and civility that endangers our people.
A viewing will be held on Sunday, November 30, 2025, 3:00 to 6:00 p.m., at Gethers Funeral Home, 200 Grace Street, Moncks Corner, SC.
