Obituary

His Life: Mr. James Clifford Curry was born January 1, 1927 in Troy, Alabama to the late Josephine and Huey Curry. He peacefully entered into eternal rest on Sunday, April 4, 2021 at 2:03 a.m. at Trident Medical Center in North Charleston, South Carolina.

He was educated in the public school system in Troy, Alabama. At age 16, he began working for Atlantic Coast Line Railroad as a laborer. Later, he migrated to Moncks Corner, SC. In December 1954, he joined the United States Army and completed his assignment in November 1956. Upon his return to Moncks Corner, he worked for Flax Jones Lumber Yard. After a few years with Flax Jones, he returned to the railroads with Seaboard Coast Line. During his career, he received numerous promotions and retired in 1989 as an inspector. He loved his career with the railroads and cherished the relationships he built. He had an infectious laugh and would often say, "he never met a stranger".

On March 22, 1954, he married Gertrude Bash Curry. To hear him tell it, she was a "sight for sore eyes". To this union, there were four children born: James Huey, Elizabeth Gail, Leon "Tony", and Ralph Jacob. He reared JoAnn and Georgetta Bash as his own children.

His Interests: Mr. Curry played minor league baseball as an accomplished first-baseman. He was a member of the Negro League and played alongside Hank Aaron, Willie Mays, Satchel Paige, and others. Baseball was a passion that would be a part of him, and he loved to watch baseball for the love of the game. As a sports enthusiast, he loved to watch professional wrestling, basketball and football.

In 1949, he became a life-long member of the Prince Hall Free and Accepted Masons. For many years he was a member in Harleyville, SC. Later, he was admitted into Moncks Corner Lodge #323, where he was highly esteemed and valued. He was honored in 2019 with the Edward M. Gibson Living Legacy Award.

His Legacy: Mr. Curry is preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Gertrude; daughter-in-law, Ann Enlow Curry; daughter, Georgetta; son-in-law, Lee A. Marshall; grandsons, Clayton and Michael D. Bash; siblings, Walter, Robert and Jimmie Curry, Alvesta Johnson and Mary Feagin.

He leaves to cherish his memories: his children, JoAnn Marshall, James (Vanessa) Curry, Gail (Jasper) Addison, Leon (Barbara) Curry, Ralph Curry and Johnny (Shaneka) Cleveland; special son, Leroy Cordes; his "hand & foot" grandson, Terrel Curry; siblings, Annie Kate Bray and Clarence (Gwendolyn) Curry; 19 grandchildren, 26 great grandchildren, 11 great great grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives and friends.
