Janet P. Hudgen, daughter of the late Albert and Marie Preston, was born on December 15, 1935 in Quincy, Florida. Janet went to join the Lord on Wednesday, November 23, 2016 in Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina, after a long battle with cancer.

She was educated in the public schools of Quincy, FL, where she was raised by her beloved uncle and aunt, Henry and Bernice Crooms.

Janet was a beloved teacher with the Dorchester County School System until her retirement in the early 2000s. Upon her retirement, she continued her devotion to helping others by volunteering in her community through such agencies as Habitat for Humanity.

She was a member of Centenary United Methodist Church where she served as Treasurer and Secretary for many years.

Janet was not only a devoted wife and mother, but also a dearly loved daughter, grandmother, sister, aunt, teacher and friend to all that were graced by her presence.

Janet, also known as "Nana" by her granddaughters, supported and inspired many young people to pursue a college education. In addition to her joy in helping others, she loved talking to her grandchildren and watching criminal justice shows with her beloved husband.

Janet will be greatly missed by everyone that has ever encountered her kind soul.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Albert and Harry.

She is survived by: her husband, Earther Lee Hudgen; her children, Terrence Keith Hudgen and Shauna Yvonne Hudgen; a daughter-in-law, Latonda Dillworth-Hudgen; one she thought of as a daughter, Cheryl Merritt; two grandchildren, Jaylin-Paige Hudgen and Terri-Lynn Hudgen; five sisters and one brother, Bobbi, Edna, Sarah, Shirley, Diane and Larry; a host of nieces, nephews and friends that will miss her dearly.
