Obituary

For a day in Your courts is better than a thousand.

I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God.

Than dwell in the tents of wickedness.

Psalm 84:10

Mrs. Jannie L. Gethers, daughter of the late Willie R. Coad and Carrie Wright Coad, was born on June 6, 1936 in the Santee Circle area of Moncks Corner, South Carolina. On Sunday, July 9, 2017, God beckoned, and she anxiously, eagerly answered His call.

Jannie accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as her personal Savior at the age of thirteen (13) and was baptized by the late Reverend Ishmael Prioleau. She served in the Usher's Ministry.

"Plummie" and "Shortie", as she was affectionately dubbed by family and friends, received her education in the Berkeley County School District. After graduation, Jannie ventured first to Greensboro, NC for a short while before traveling to New York.  Upon arrival in the "Big Apple", she searched for a church, as per her mother's admonishment, and joined the fellowship of the Springfield Missionary Baptist Church, serving on the Pastor's Aid and singing on the Gospel Choir.

In 1993, she retired from the Holmes Protection Agency and shortly afterward relocated to South Carolina to care for her aging mother and two ailing brothers.  Jannie reconnected with Anderson Baptist Church and resumed ushering and instituted the Pastor's Aid Ministry under the leadership of Reverend Jeremiah Bradley. Her community involvement included Voter's Registration, and she served as a poll supervisor for many years until her health started to decline.

"Shorty" was a very giving, loving, caring and outspoken person known for her quick but good naturedly and descriptive responses to whatever was said.  She gave unselfishly to all who needed help, that was the way she was.

On December 31, 1968, she was joined in holy matrimony to Mr. Alphonso "Bunny" Gethers who preceded her in death.

She will be missed profoundly by: her children, Gwen (Jimmy) Wynn, Kinston, NC, Derrick Gethers, Moncks Corner, SC, Detric Lampkin, grandson raised in the home, Williette (Arzwell) Peace, Moncks Corner, SC and Linda (Glenn) Bond, Herndon, VA; one sister, Jessie M. Whitfield, Moncks Corner, SC; two brothers, Joseph (Althia) Coad and Richard (Hattie) Coad, Moncks Corner, SC; grandchildren, Kadrian, Rashod, Rictasha, Darrell, Eliza (Tony), Tamara (Marcus), Donrico, Glenn Jr., Lamont and Aaron; great-grandchildren, Junaiza, Jhalen, Chandler, Denae, Kingston, Trinity and Nyla; sisters-in-law, Hazel Coads, Hempstead, NY, Lela Wright, Harrisburg, PA and Odessa Green, Moncks Corner, SC; brothers-in-law, Daniel Gethers, Jr., Moncks Corner, SC and Carroll Gethers, Bronx, NY; Godchildren, Cheryl Gibbs Davis, Stacy Brown, Cleveland Robinson, Jr. and Khalen Conner; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and the Anderson Baptist Church family.

To My Family

The battle within me was too strong

for me alone to fight.

It stayed with me during the day,

but I was at my lowest at night.

I longed for the sweet oblivion of uninterrupted sleep,

But sleep never came until I

was compelled to mourn and weep.

Weeping may endure for a night, the Bible tells me this

But joy comes in the morning light with unadulterated bliss.

Please listen to the words I've written,

for it comes straight from the heart.

Family and friends may reflect when we, at last, must part.

Love,

Shortie
