Jean Campbell Rivers was born July 28, 1923 in Berkeley County, South Carolina. She was a daughter of the late Willie Campbell and Sarah Johnson Campbell. She departed this life on Saturday, June 8, 2013 at Riverside Health Center, North Charleston, SC. Jean, affectionately called "Tauntie" by her family and friends, received her education in the public schools of Berkeley County. She later graduated from Palmetto Beauty College, Charleston, SC. She attended the National Institute of Cosmetology (NIC) of the National Beauty Culturists League, Incorporated. She was a talented beautician and owned her beauty shop for over 50 years. "Tauntie" was quite active in cosmetology organizations where she held membership in the following: South Carolina State Cosmetologist Association (SCSCA), Region One Beautician's Club, SCSCA State Choir, Theta Nu Sigma National Sorority of the Upsilon Chapter, and the National Beauty Culturists' League, Inc. Jean accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior at an early age and attended Mt. Carmel A.M.E. Church, Moncks Corner, SC. After relocating to the Liberty Hill Community, North Charleston, SC, she became a member of St. Peter's A.M.E. Church where she sang on the choir for many years until her health began to decline. She was also a member of the famous Pilgrim Gospel Singers. Jean was united in holy matrimony to Benjamin "BJ" Rivers in 1946. He preceded her in death in 1990. This union was blessed with one son, Arnie and a grandniece who she reared as a daughter, DeKeisha. Arnie also preceded her in death. "Tauntie" was a loving, kind and compassionate woman who brought many into her home and nurtured them, including two nieces, Marcella Taylor and Michelle Johnson Williams. "Tauntie" enjoyed fishing and cooking. She touched many lives with her delicious meals and her warm hospitality. She was well loved by all and will be greatly missed. Those left behind to cherish her memories: a daughter, DeKeisha Johnson of Florida; one brother, Harold Campbell of Brooklyn, NY; one sister, Dorothy C. White of Summerville, SC; five grandchildren, Chad Grant, Tiera Grant, Darius Rivers, Jaci Johnson and Tah'Brea Robinson of North Charleston, SC; two great-grandchildren; four sisters-in-law, Gladys White, Wilhelmenia Frazier, Evelyn White, and Nisa Mae Nesmith; three brothers-in-law, Joseph Rivers (Eva), James White, and Gabe White (Sandra); and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
