A Celebration of Life Service for Mrs. Joan W. Vanderhorst of the Bonnie Forest community of Columbia, SC  will be held Saturday, June 8, 2019, at 11:00 a.m., at the O. Allen Gethers Jr. Memorial Chapel, Gethers Funeral Home, 200 Grace Street, Moncks Corner, SC.  Burial will be in Greater St. James AME Church Cemetery, 1831 Jedburg Road, Summerville, SC. Viewing will be Friday from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations in memory of Mrs. Vanderhorst be sent to: 5 Misty Vale Circle, Columbia, SC 29210.

Joan W. Vanderhorst was born on November 8, 1938 in New York City, NY. She was a daughter of the late Howard West, Sr. and Essa Randolph West.

Joan received her education in the New York schools and graduated from Washington Irving High School. She was employed as a data processor with Blue Cross Blue Shield.

Joan was united in holy matrimony to Oneil Vanderhorst on July 6, 1957. This union was blessed with three children, Barbara, Vanessa and Oneil, Jr.

Joan relocated to South Carolina in August 1976. Her hobbies included bowling and cooking.

Joan peacefully departed this life on Saturday, June 1, 2019 in Ladson, SC. She will be remembered for her kind and gentle spirit.

Those left to cherish her memory and legacy are: her husband, Oneil Vanderhorst; children, Barbara Ann Vanderhorst, Vanessa Vanderhorst and Oneil Vanderhorst, Jr.; five grandchildren, Desiree Vanderhorst, Neco Vanderhorst, Nolan Vanderhorst, Christin Vanderhorst and Cicely "CC" Vanderhorst; sisters, Barbara (Rudy) Headley, Catherine Conyers, Doris Rouse and Denise (Terrell) Flanigan; brother, Howard West, Jr.; brother-in-law, James (Beulah) Vanderhorst;  and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
