IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Joann G.
Spann
May 21, 1948 – April 8, 2021
"Let not your heart be troubled; you believe in God, believe also in Me. In My Father's house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you." John 14:1-2 KJV
Joann Gwendolyn Holback Spann, also known as Joan to family and friends, was the oldest of two children born to the union of the late Walter and Idell Holback on May 21, 1948 in Brooklyn, New York.
Joann was a 1967 graduate of Russellville High School, St. Stephen, SC and earned an Associate Degree in Early Childhood Development at South Carolina State Extension. She retired from Berkeley County School System and from Berkeley Citizens.
Joann met and fell in love with her best friend, Harold Spann. They were joined in holy matrimony on October 30, 1968. To this union, they were blessed with four children.
At an early age, Joann accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as her personal Savior and became a member of Jerusalem Baptist Church in Jamestown, SC. She later joined Rock Hill Baptist Church after marriage and moving to Moncks Corner, SC. She became an active member of Rock Hill Baptist Church and dedicated herself to Christian service for the upbuilding of God's kingdom. She served on the Usher Board, the Pulpit Aid and was the President of the Gospel Choir. She was also a Sunday School Teacher and a Missionary who loved to give her time to her community. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Jamestown Chapter No. 386, Jamestown, SC.
Joann was a talented woman and had several pastimes. She loved bowling and was a member of the Morning Glory Bowling League. In her spare time, she made jewelry. Cooking was a gift that came natural to her. She loved cooking and baking for others. Her spaghetti and meatballs and bread pudding were absolutely the best!
Joann always put family first and enjoyed taking lots and lots of pictures of her family because she wanted them to know how much she loved them and wanted them to treasure the moments and memories that they shared together as a family.
Joann was a strong woman of faith and a prayer warrior. Her life was a living example of her favorite Bible verses, John 14:1-2, "Let not your heart be troubled; you believe in God, believe also in Me. In My Father's house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you." She truly had a heart of gold and always gave unselfishly to others without never wanting anything in return.
Joann transitioned into eternal life with the Lord on April 8, 2021 in Mt. Pleasant, SC.
The wonderful memories of her life and sweet giving spirit will be remembered by: her loving and devoted husband of 52 years, Deacon Harold Spann, Sr.; children, Gwendolyn Spann, Harold Spann Jr., Bassanio Spann (Lateshia) and Nigia Randolph (Christopher); daughter-in-law, Sheila Spann; grandchildren, Shakera Varner, Radasha Murray, Radesha Murray, Will Chavis, Harlynn Spann and Joshua Spann; sister, Audrey Gillians. She also leaves a host of nieces, nephews, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, godchildren, other relatives and friends.
Joann was preceded in death by her granddaughter, Shakira Varner and her eldest son Jonathan Spann.
Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid. John 14:27 KJV
