Obituary

"For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him shall not perish, but have everlasting life." St. John 3:16 Joe Samuel Swinton, Sr. was born on May 2, 1963 in the 41 Community of St. Stephen, South Carolina. He was the son of the late John Swinton, Sr. and the late Mary Lee Rollerson Swinton. Joe departed this life in January of 2010. Joe attended the public schools in Berkeley County, SC. He was a 1981 graduate of Macedonia High School. He was employed by Carolina Nurseries for 29 years as a Crew Leader Supervisor. Joe was married to the former Lillie Bell Patricia Thomas. He later united with Charlene Milligan. At an early age, Joe became a member of Good Shepherd Reformed Episcopal Church. "Smokey Joe" or "War Daddy", as he was called by many of his family and friends, was a very loving and caring person. He loved his family and friends. Joe would do anything to help people. He always was lending a helping hand to anyone he came in contact with. Joe was a "people" person. He loved to talk and have fun with his family and friends. He always placed his family ahead of himself. Joe will be greatly missed by many who knew him. Joe was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Jacob and Elijah Rollerson. He leaves to cherish his loving memories: his devoted companion, Charlene Milligan of St. Stephen, SC; one daughter, Brittney D. Swinton of St. Stephen, SC; four sons, Keyon Milligan of Pineville, SC, Dequairs Milligan, Joe Swinton, Jr., and Malaic Swinton all of St. Stephen, SC; two stepdaughters, Sandra Small of Philadelphia, PA and Evangeline McDaniel of St. Stephen, SC; one sister, Vernell Swinton of St. Stephen, SC; six brothers: John (Anna) Swinton, Jr. of St. Stephen, SC, Raymond (Melissa) Swinton of Eutawville, SC, David (Wendy) Swinton, Benjamin Swinton, James Swinton all of St. Stephen, SC and Kendrick Swinton of Goose Creek, SC; aunts, Estelle R. Wilson, Rebecca R. Middleton, Victoria Anderson all of St. Stephen, SC, Dorothy White, Maebell (Willie) House, Rebecca Swinton all of New York City, NY and Odessa Brown of Georgia; uncles, Ernest (Mildred) Brown of Alvin, SC and Leroy Swinton of New York City, NY; devoted cousin, Lucretia (Gwen) Varner and Annie Mae (James) Ludd; godmothers, Mrs. Albertha Davis and Mrs. Dorothy Faber; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
