Joel Warren Richmond, III was born May 7, 1944, in Cordesville, South Carolina, a son of Albert Mannie Cooper and Mabel Richmond Lloyd. He was the second of five children to Mabel and the second of seven for Mannie. Joel transitioned to eternal rest August 30, 2021, in Conway, South Carolina.
Brother or Bubba, as he was affectionately called by many, graduated from Berkeley Training High School in 1962 and worked in construction until he was drafted into the United States Army in May 1966. Joel served in Vietnam where he was assigned to the 25th Infantry Division - search and destroy. He was injured and returned home after three years in the military. After his honorable discharge, Joel maintained his military connection through employment with the Charleston Naval Shipyard as a Machinist Mechanic. He later was employed with the Berkeley County School District and the South Carolina Vocational Rehabilitation Center.
Brother accepted Christ at an early age and joined Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church, Cordesville, South Carolina, where he served on the Board of Trustees and as a Leader.
Joel was joined in Holy matrimony to Jacqueline Smalls of Jamestown, South Carolina in 1971. Their union was blessed with three children.
Brother had a calling for serving others. His civic activities included: Master Mason, Ancient Square Lodge #174, PHA; Past High Priest, Gibbs-Johnson-Scott Chapter #45, PHA; Thurgood Marshall Consistory #367, A.A.S.R. PHA; Noble, Arabian Temple #139, A.E.A.O.N.M.S.; and South Carolina Order of the Knights of Pythagoras, PHA.
Joel leaves with cherished memories: daughters, Pamela Major Simmons of Moncks Corner, SC, Coretta Simmons Blume (John) of Columbia, SC, Dr. Katina M. Richmond of Conway, SC and Angela Richmond Gaddist (Rondell) of Charlotte, NC; stepmother, Dr. Clara H. Cooper; two grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; sisters, Barbara Antoine, Deborah Lloyd, Elzina Lloyd, Myra Lloyd Revish, Rhonda Collier and Cathy Cooper; uncles, Albert Richmond and Stanley Richmond (Betty); sisters-in-law, Omelia Rodgers (Coy), Ruby Knight and Evelyn Smith; brother-in-law, Eugene Smalls; special nieces, Nicole Lloyd, Adriene Brumfield, Maxine Weiters (Gary) and Annie Shine (Charlie); special nephew, John Emory Lloyd (Tania); and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Joel was preceded in death by: his parents, Albert Mannie Cooper and Mabel Lloyd; stepfather, Teddy Lloyd, Sr.; wife, Jacqueline S. Richmond; son, Joel Patrick Richmond; grandson, George O. Simmons; brother, Teddy Lloyd, Jr.; sister, Ruth Johnson; brothers-in-law, Daniel Smalls (Ruth) and Richard "Red" Smalls (Janice).
Viewing will be held Friday, September 3, 2021, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Face masks are required.
Graveside Service will be held Saturday, September 4, 2021, 11:00 a.m., at Cooper's Memorial Cemetery, 1325 North Highway 17A, Moncks Corner, SC. Please wear a face mask and practice social distancing.
