John Antie Smith, a son of the late Charley H. Smith and Maggie Z. Smith, was born on October 31, 1946 in Belzoni, Mississippi. He passed from this life to eternal rest on Tuesday, July 31, 2018 at Trident Medical Center, Charleston, South Carolina.

John was educated in the public schools of Humphreys County, graduating from Montgomery High School, Louise, MS in 1966. John furthered his education at Limestone College, Gaffney, SC and graduated from Alpha & Omega Bible College, North Charleston, SC with a Bachelor degree in Biblical Study.

John enlisted in the United States Navy in 1966, and served as a SKC (Chief Store Keeper) and CPO (Chief Petty Officer). He received an honorable discharge on June 30, 1990 after providing 24 years of service.

He later joined Santee Cooper and was employed as a Buyer II from May 13, 1991 until his retirement on January 9, 2009. Upon retiring from Santee Cooper, he worked at the Charleston Naval Weapons Station as a vendor and retired from there in November 2017.

John was united in Holy Matrimony to Deborah E. Washington on December 20, 2008.

John was a dedicated and faithful member of Mount Carmel African Methodist Episcopal Church, where he served in several capacities: Sunday School Superintendent, Steward Board, Class Leader, Treasurer and Chaplain of the Lay Organization, and member of the Health Commission. He also actively participated in the Kingstree District Lay Organization.

John was active in the community. He was a member of the Cherry Hill Community Center Project, Board of Directors of Habitat for Humanity of Berkeley County, and member of the Berkeley County Male Choir. Through his lawn care and pressure washing business, John provided service for the elderly and others in the community.

John was a member of the Xi Phi Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., where he served as Treasurer.

He was preceded in death by: his parents; son, Johnathan R. Smith; and brothers-in-law, Louis Nunn, Alonzo Pearson and George Lett.

John leaves to cherish his memory: his wife, Deborah E. Smith; daughters, Arrevion C. Ramos (Dido), LaTanya S. Gathers (Jason), and Nicole R. Washington; two granddaughters and six grandsons; siblings, Edna Earl Nunn, Houston Smith, Willie Mae Smith, Gloria Jean Ward (Roosevelt), Hattie Smith Pearson, Fay Lett, Brenda Smith, Patricia Hunter (Willie), Shelia Wright (Theras), Sharon Smith, Viola Morgan (Tom), Arma Henderson (Herbert) and Clara Bell Smith; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, family and friends whom he loved dearly.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, August 6, 2018, 11:00 a.m., at Mt. Carmel A.M.E. Church, 1059 Old Black Oak Road, Moncks Corner, SC. Burial will take place in the church cemetery. Visitation and viewing will be on Sunday, August 5, 2018 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Gethers Funeral Home Inc., Moncks Corner, SC.
