Obituary

John E. Warren, known to many as "Butch", was born and raised on a farm in Berkeley County, near St. Stephen, South Carolina. He was the son of Eugene and Ruth Warren but was raised by his beloved grandparents, Sam and Leila Middleton on Proper Hill. Sam and Leila helped raise and cultivate different families and multiple generations - Middletons, Smalls, Warrens, Carrs, Hamiltons and Daniels, therefore, John was raised with a host of siblings, cousins, and adoptive siblings. They all grew up tightly bonded and forever linked in life.

Brother John accepted Jesus as his Lord and Savior at 11 years old. He was educated in Berkeley County School System. After graduation, he later joined the United States Air Force. John attended Trident Technical College after being honorably discharged. He was employed at Palmetto Ford and Charleston Lincoln Mercury for 20 years. Brother Warren also was the owner and operator of Professional Automotive. In 1999, he graduated from Cummins Theological Seminary. While serving at New St. Thomas, in Columbia, SC, he started a Youth Ministry.

His love of Black History led him, in 2006, to become a licensed Tour Guide for the City of Charleston. His mission to be God's hand and feet resulted in his missionary work as a volunteer for the Hospice of Charleston. He loved to fish in his free time and loved how God's love is reflected in nature.

Brother John was a father, grandfather, and dedicated church member. His passion was reaching the youth. The next generation of the church is in our children. Brother Warren wanted to do his part in making sure that their souls are not lost in the troubles of this world.

His ministerial background includes the following:

  • - Created Youth Awareness Day for Diocese' Purpose: To educate young people about Teen Pregnancy, Teen Crime and Violence, Teen Drug Abuse and Alcohol Abuse.
  • - Created Diocesan Youth Night Services. Worship services were conducted in the Charleston, Moncks Corner, and Columbia, SC on the same night at the same hour.
