Julia Rachel Ann Anderson Major, affectionately known as Rachel, was born on March 5, 1925 in Moncks Corner, South Carolina, a daughter of the late Julius Anderson and Clara Middleton Anderson.
Rachel attended Dixie High School, later renamed Berkeley Training School. After high school, she attended South Carolina State College in Orangeburg, SC. Rachel enrolled and graduated from Starks Beauty College in Raleigh, North Carolina in 1945.
Rachel was a longtime and faithful member of Grace Reformed Episcopal Church and Wesley United Methodist Church.
She faithfully served as a Sunday School Teacher, President of the Usher Board, member of Union #7 Traveling Usher and Chairperson of the Health and Welfare Board. She later returned to her home church, Grace Reformed Episcopal Church. Rachel's civic affiliations included memberships in the Willing Workers Society and Moncks Corner Chapter No. 161, Order of the Eastern Star where she served for more than 50 years. Rachel was employed a clothes presser for various dry cleaners and William Heller.
Rachel was united in Holy Matrimony to Stephney Sims, Sr. Four children were born to this union, Stephney (S.T.), Eugene, Lewis and Ozra Sims. Upon his death, she married Isaac Burden. After his death, she married Alfred Major, Sr. who also preceded her in death.
She was also preceded in death by: a son, Stephney Sims, Jr.; grandson, Anthony Terry; and brothers, Elmore and
James Anderson.
She leaves to cherish and celebrate her life: her children, Reverend Eugene A. Sims of St. Stephen, SC, Lewis Sims Anderson (Yvonne) of Moncks Corner, SC and Ozra Sims of Moncks Corner, SC; a special grandson, Steven Sims (Trivia Milford); adopted grandchildren, Kenneth Manigault, Jr., Anitra and Tia Gavin; special cousin, Samuel Shine (Shirley); daughters-in-law, Juliette Sims and Geraldine Major; stepsons, Henry Burden, Leroy Mack and Walter "Ervin" Mack, Sr. (Mildred), Nathaniel Richardson (Essie); stepdaughters, Gertie Smith (Ernest) and Deloris May; brother-in-law, Sass Burden; sister-in-law, Alma Burden; eight grandchildren; a host of great-grandchildren, great, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
